A 56 metre (183 ft) long sailing yacht with tourists has sunk off the coast of Palermo in poor weather in the early hours of Monday morning. 15 people, including a one-year-old child, has been rescuded, while seven are missing. A wreck has been identified at a dept of 50 metres. There were 10 crew, and 12 passagers, among them four Britons, as well as Americans, and Canadians.

British tech billionaire Mike Lynch is missing off Sicily's coast after a yacht sank, Sky News understands.

One person is dead and six others are missing after a UK-flagged superyacht named Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily in a storm.

Sky News also understands the yacht is owned by the family of Dr Lynch.

It comes just weeks after Dr Lynch, 59, was in June cleared of all charges by a US jury in the high-profile fraud case related to the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011.

Sicily yacht survivor - 'for two seconds I lost my baby in the sea'

Charlotte Golunski used all her strength to hold her baby above the surface of the water after the Bayesian yacht sank.

''For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves,” the paper quoted her as saying.

Charlotte said she held her baby "afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning".

Among those missing is Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of Mike Lynch. The yacht's chef is the one found dead. The rest of the missing are probably still in the sunken ship.

What I don't understand is why so many people were on the yacht.

According to news articles, the yacht could accommodate 12, in 6 staterooms.

Bacares, Lynch, and their children account for 4. They had 10 crewmembers and one wonders what their accommodations were.

But why were 8 guests on board? Friends of the family? The yacht seems very crowded even given its vast size and comforts.

CG, the mother of the baby, is a colleague of Mike Lynch, and my guessis that the other guests are also his colleagues + their partners. I don't think the yacht was that crowded, as it could accomodate 12. Most likely they sailed along the coast, from port to port, perhaps during the night, so there would have plenty of time off the boat.

As for the crew, their cabin are small, and tucked away, do a seach for "crew cabins yacht" to find photos. It's only luxury for the guests, not for the crew.

Lynch told journalist 'I'm going on a very long holiday' after acquittal​

Mike Lynch told a journalist who interviewed him only last month that he was "about to go on a very long holiday" having spent more than a year under house arrest in the US.
Danny Fortson, West Coast correspondent for The Sunday Times, told Sky News that Mr Lynch was ready to take a "big deep breath" and relax with his family after being acquitted in a high-profile US fraud case in June.
Mr Fortson said the case had "hung over his head for a decade" as Mr Lynch believed there was only 1% chance he would be found not guilty of crimes for which he could've been jailed for 25 years.
After being cleared, the journalist said Mr Lynch kept saying: "This is like I have a second life, I have a new lease on life, I’ve won my freedom, now I need to figure out what to do with the rest of my life."
Barely a month later, Mr Forston said, "it's kind of hard to believe" Mr Lynch is now missing.

Lynch co-defendant dies after being hit by car​

Stephen Chamberlain, co-defendant in Mike Lynch's US fraud trial, has died after being hit by a car, according to his lawyer.
Mr Chamberlain was struck by a vehicle while running in Stretham, Cambridgeshire, and put on life support.
Police said a 49-year-old woman remained at the scene and was assisting with enquiries.
Mr Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance for Mr Lynch at Autonomy, was cleared of fraud and conspiracy charges by a San Francisco jury in June.
They were falsely accused of inflating the firm's value before it was sold to US company Hewlett-Packard.
"He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity, and we deeply miss him," lawyer Gary Lincenberg said.
"He fought successfully to clear his good name, which lives on through his wonderful family."

Yacht 'in the wrong place at wrong time'​

Salvo Cocina from Sicily's civil protection agency has said the Bayesian was "in the wrong place at the wrong time".
Another superyacht nearby, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors.
A storm hit the area overnight and a waterspout has been blamed for the sinking.

Karsten Börner was the captain of the large, Dutch-flagged sailing ship Sir Robert Baden Powell at the time of the incident. His 42-meter vessel was anchored near the Bayesianwhen the storm hit. He described a "very strong" hurricane-like gust, which forced him to fire up his engine to maintain his ship's position, while avoiding the yacht close to them. A local fisherman said it may have been caused by a waterspout, a funnel cloud that develops over water, as opposed to a tornado, which forms over land.

This boat is 14m smaller than the sunken craft.
