we'll need fed involement to get the vegas pd or crime lab to act on anything.

DNA evidence is fascinating and yet scary too! On the Jon Benet thread there is a DNA "primer". Some of the errors described are quite interesting!! It's a great jumping off point to understand how DNA is used and describes how much of different types of DNA is needed. I can see why jurys get confused though. I was, by some of it!

There's always hope!

The OSP lab recently helped solve a case that dated to 1976. The age of the evidence in such cases -- or how much evidence is left -- is less important than how it has been stored.

"It can be pretty old and degraded because we're looking at very small fragments," Hormann said.

"So these cold cases have been very successful. As long as the evidence has been kept dry and at a stable temperature, we're able to get good results."

The solved cold case from 1976 was the murder of 80-year-old Rosa Cinnamon, who was found beaten and strangled in her Portland home.

DNA evidence has always existed, they just didn't have the DNA tests. It is unlikely but there have been cases where they were able to test evidence and get a profile, particularly if the evidence is preserved well.

if the evidence has been stored and kept properly since 1975. some departments iscard evidence after a certian amount ooof years.
and this is las vegas, i have a little background with there preserving forensic evidence.

I know in California they made laws about preserving evidence, however, a recent commission still found some weren't even aware of that or whatever and had destroyed or lost evidence. Gotta wonder too if some evidence suspiciously comes up missing, esp if it's possible there were wrongful convictions which happen far more frequently than the public knows.

well its vegas, so if there's a wrongful conviction involved, they will claim they never had the evidence.

Hmmm, is that where the "If it happens in Vegas, it stays in Vegas" slogan comes in? Just kidding. I got robbed in Vegas once, in a casino. They had caught the guy and recovered my purse and had me down in the bowels of the casino, showing me the video feed of it, within 20 min. I was VERY impressed! They charged the guy with a felony because he pulled me off of a stool when he stole my purse. Battery. I was really amazed actually. Impressive!! Sorry that your experience in Vegas was the complete opposite kbl!

diffrent crime, diffrent perpetrator.
if the thief was a police informant i doubt it has the same outcome.

Guys, you gotta have more faith than that! Start watching more episodes of Forensic Files and Snapped and you will see how often cold cases get solved by preserving DNA in cases from the 70's, 80's, and 90's!

Also, on another note, since Jaycee's abduction took place in El Dorado county, not Contra Costa, and El Dorado is where the Garrido's are being held, that is most likely where they will go to trial, unless a change of venue is successful.

linas i only speak about vegas crime labs like that cause i have experience fighting to get testing done.
they also claimed they didnt hae eidence that it turned out they did. then they only brought it into court when we forced there hand.

So, I'm surfing while I'm waiting for it to come up. I get side tracked for about 10 minutes and realize that it never started. I go back to the KFI page, yeah, I forgot to click "listen live". I caught the end, when they were telling her thank you and that they would put something up on the site, I'm assuming the interview will be up later, yes? I love KCH and can't wait to hear from her. She's so admirable.

She should be careful about not overstaying her 15 minutes. This sort of attention can be seductive. I think there is a fine line in these things, and if you are there too long it can start to generate a cynical response that you might not be prepared for.

I think the entire interview will be available by tomorrow on this site:

Look for the podcast links on the right side of the page.

Natal, you could be right. We've seen it happen before. However, I don't see her ever generating a cynical response from myself. My opinion of her will always be one of admiration. I feel she truly wants to share her story in order to help stop this from happening. To help prove that violent rapists DON'T change. I also feel she is very angry that he was able to get away with what he put her through, only to do it again. Except worse. Her story helps to prove that this behavior only escalates.

Katie Callaway Hall, as she's now known, described in chilling detail being attacked by Garrido in 1976, and the aftermath. It's an amazing interview.
In 1988, after Garrido was released from prison, he shocked her by showing up at her casino. She was a card dealer, and at work that day. She looked up from the table, and Garrido was standing right there staring at her.
I can't even imagine the surprise AND the terror that caused her. He said something to the effect (I'm trying to remember the exact words from today's interview), "Katie, I hope to be seeing you soon!", and then left. She said at that point she was wondering if he was going to kidnap her all over again. She somehow found a safe way home, and then moved away from the area to a small town. Even there, she said there were mysterious phone calls to her office from a woman who would not give her name, inquiring about her. These calls she now thinks came from Nancy Garrido.

Like Tizzle, I unfortunately caught the very end of the interview when they were saying thanks, etc. She did very quickly add she had started a website called .......... and I didn't catch it something like KatieCalloway.com, I googled some things and couldn't find it. Wait, now I remember, they said they'd post a link on their website, I'll go there and look for it.

That was an interesting interview. One thing that stuck in my mind is I didn't know Katie had gone into real estate. She said while she was working in the real estate office they were getting weird calls inquiring about her. (I believe someone said here that she was living in Patterson, not really that far from Antioch) Which stopped around 1991. She feels now that it was Nancy Garrido. My thought is it was more likely from another realtor, named Patricia Garrido, probably wondering if she had a grandchild!
