NEOSHO RAPIDS, Kan. (KSNT) – The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate after a human skull and other skeletal remains were discovered earlier this year west of Neosho Rapids.

An update on the investigation this week revealed the remains found on April 29, 2017 are those of a man, possibly mixed race, 5’4″ to 5’6″ in height, possibly middle to late aged and longer hair that is blonde, whtie, or grey in color.

Authorities hope a digital watch found in the bedding with the remains will help identify the victim.
Officials also reported the man had scoliosis.

Namus lists age as 24-99 years old.

Probable year of death 2013 - 2016.

On 04/29/2017, deputies were dispatched to the 2000 block of Road 145 just outside of Neosho Rapids, KS (Lyon County) for a person that stated he had found a skull. The reporting party stated he had walked to the river to see how high the water had risen from recent rain when he noticed a skull in a grassy area on the east bank of the Neosho River. Law Enforcement was able to locate the skull as well as a black trash sack, approximately 20 feet north of the skull that contained the remaining body parts. The remains were wrapped in a fitted bed sheet and comforter. The bedding was placed in a black law and leaf trash sack. The sack was tied on the top but animals had torn into the bag to access the remains. It is believed the individual had a predominantly white heritage with African American traits (possibly mixed race).

A skull was found April 29 near the Neosho River just outside of Neosho Rapids. Lyon County officers later found more remains.

The remains were wrapped in a bed sheet and comforter. A digital watch also was found.
The Emporia Gazette reports an autopsy indicated the remains were a male who might have been of mixed race. He was between 5-feet-4 and 5-feet-6 and possibly of middle-to-late age. His long hair was blonde, white or gray. The man also had scoliosis.

The man apparently died between 2013 and 2016.
Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope said says a private lab is testing DNA to help with identification and national organizations for missing people have been notified.

No updated on Namus for the past year. Any ruleouts at all?

I don't think that's a particularly expensive watch; I found a $22 kids' watch on eBay that contains what looks to be the same LCD core, only in a different mounting.

Do y’all wanna try my system for easy access to “scoliosis” or any other variant wildcard WS search criteria? I’ve found this formula very useful & I’m willing to help all I can. Copy/paste entire string into Google search bar… don’t click WS Hyperlink showing up below here: we can further narrow these findings but it’s a down and dirty for starters.

site:www.websleuths.com "scoliosis"

I’m surprised so many connections pop up… I have extremely severe scoliosis so I know a lot about the condition. My doc first called me at home years ago and said the only patient he had heard of with my scores was a marathon runner from Kenya.

I feel like they should be able to narrow down the age range a LITTLE BIT
I think they do this just to cover more ground if people want to send matches in. It's easy to get wrong with estimating age, so you dont want to say "oh they were in their 20s", and then it turns out to be a 35 year old and the match wasn't considered bc of age.

NEOSHO RAPIDS, Kan. (WIBW) - New information has been released about the circumstances of a skull found in 2017 that has yet to be identified.

Kansas Missing and Unsolved released new details on Tuesday, Jan. 31, in a case opened in 2017 after a human skull was found on a bank by Neosho Rapids in Lyon County.

We are now working on the case:

''Summary

In April 2017, the Lyon County Sheriff's Department responded to a call that a skull had been found along the banks of the Neosho River following a period of recent rain in Lyon County, Kansas. Upon processing the scene, law enforcement located the skull and also discovered a large black trash bag that contained the individual's remaining body parts wrapped inside of a fitted bed sheet and comforter. A digital watch was also found inside of the trash bag. While the discovered remains were skeletonized, investigators were able to determine the man's hair color was blonde, white, or gray and approximately 6 to 8 inches long. Additionally, it was estimated that the middle-to-late aged man, who had scoliosis, was 5'5" tall at his time of death. The unknown man's year of death was likely between 2013 and 2016. The ancestry of the individual could not be accurately determined.

In August 2017, details of the case were entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) as #UP16928. Over the past five and a half years, investigators have diligently worked to identify the Neosho Rapids, Kansas John Doe. However, the identity of the man remains unknown.

In 2023, Lyon County Sheriff's Department investigators partnered with Othram to determine if advanced forensic DNA testing will help to identify the man. Othram will work to develop a comprehensive DNA profile using Forensic Grade Genomic Sequencing®. The resulting profile will be used in genealogical research in hopes of identifying the man or a close relative. Anyone with information that could aid in this investigation is encouraged to contact the Lyon County Sheriff's Department by calling 620-341-3205 and referencing agency case L17-04-164LY or NamUs ID #UP16928.

Law enforcement has funded the majority of the costs associated with this case but we need public support to complete the funding for this case.''
