If it was an iPhone, she might have had trouble finding a charger. The majority of young people that I know, have Android style phones. The phones usually look like they've been run over by a car several times, too. If she left her charger in her mom's car, she didn't even have any money to stop and get a spare.
It’s definitely an iPhone, I‘m just not sure about the model. Could be a 7 or 8 (not Plus but regular).

Battery life would also be reduced at cold temperatures.
 
Devices also drain battery faster when you're on the move, jumping from tower to tower; the device has to constantly scan and ping and negotiate connections to different towers. And the further away the nearest tower is the more power the device uses connecting to it; so being out in the country with distant towers will drain a phone faster than being in an urban environment with nearby towers galore.
