I'm still shaking my head that he would travel that far to drink with a headlight out.
LOL Yep, it's like asking to be pulled over. So many arrests involving drug possession are made because of taillights, no front license plate, cracked windshield, failure to signal. I could go on and on. It amazes me.
ETA correction

But what if she was murdered? I would think people would be concerned about safety. No one can possibly be sure of what happened unless they are withholding information from LE or the killers themselves. And it would be foolish to feel safe based on ones thoughts or opinions. Theres also the basic principle of justice being served.
ETA: The more posters etc the more awareness

This is sadly where the idea so many have that “it couldn’t happen to me because I’d never put myself in a situation like SS put herself in” comes in IMO.

Yes that's true but really haven't we all put ourselves in a position, sometime in our lives, that could have put us in a terrible situation?

True. Oddly enough SS probably thought the same thing. Anything can happen anywhere even with precautions. One only needs to look at the thousands of cases on WS.

Definitely. I can’t even count the number of times I put myself in bad situations when I was her age. That’s just what I gather from many of the comments, especially on SM.

It's not what I'd call desolate but it may be what SS would call desolate. If that makes sense. Unless she knew which road to take, the one to the front, dead ends, to a private residence, the road to the back of the house is taking her further away, and to the right, will get you to Richmond Road, but it's a good hour walk. If she headed toward Lancaster, her best bet, it's well over an hour walk, but it is more populated. A lot of the property in front of the FLR House, is fenced with hard to scale fencing too, and perkins has sharp embankments, with fencing along most of one side. Walking down FLR was her best bet, and there's just been no sign. I've not heard of a scrap of material or a lost scrap of anything being found.
Agree. Desolate isn't the right word.

What I have learned on this thread that amazes me, is the number of woman saying they've put themselves in dangerous situations. Why? Some primal desire to party?

It doesn’t necessarily mean the situation involved partying. I’m referring to when I was in my late teens/early 20s, especially college. I was very naive & put too much trust in some people I didn’t know as well as I thought I did at the time.

Have you never ran to the drug store after dark? Ever gone on a walk in a park? Ever gotten in your car without locking your door immediately? Exchanged some words with a stranger?
Most of us have done one or more and thought we were completely safe but were we?

I can't remember how long it takes to get those phone records but I would love to know if she did make a phone call to somebody else to pick her up that morning.
If that were the case, I don't think they would be focusing on the areas they are searching, and we would hear of someone else possibly being a POI. JMO

Confused. Has it been reported they need a place to stay? According to CCSAR FB site they one have one issue they need help with to continue searching.
ETA: I think it's easy to forget that while they donate their time, they still have a home and family to support and it's not just about what is needed to be there. I think about how long Toney has been there searching and unless he is rich it's got to take a financial toll to be away so long.
Sorry, I was going by what was said by another poster about them not having enough money to stay and/or eat. I was just pointing out some things a community could do to help the searchers financial burdens while they are there. I've seen it done in many cases on here, and I think it's a wonderful thing when a community, restaurant, grocery store, church, hotels, etc donate their time, goods, money to keep these searchers going. My bad for assuming it was a matter of monetary reasons that they are leaving.

No, I wouldn't say I've ever put myself in this situation in a "partying" way, but I sure have trusted people I shouldn't have. I've driven places I shouldn't have, I've went against my judgement and walked to my car late at night, I've went running on trails in secluded wooded areas that make me stop and think, but ultimately go running anyway. In high school once I was driving, I told my parents I was one place and went somewhere else. I have given people rides that I don't know, just to name a few.

Had to take a class on self defense last year and these situations were considered “at risk” especially for women. And many cases on WS have happened under such circumstances.

Using an ATM at dusk
Walking alone in a retail parking lot
Pumping gas at isolated country store
Meeting your ex at a park
Taking a hike alone in a secluded park

I don't think these are the things posters are referring to. jmo Most of the comments were in the context of the choices SS made that night. Not judging. Just surprised so many implied they did similar things.

This case from Jan gives me hope SS is still alive. The similarities amazingly similar! Girl leaves bar. Girl seen on surveillance video being walked down street with 2 men, one with arm around her. Girl FOUND 4 days later. One thing I found interesting in one of the articles I read involved tracking the identity of a man in the bar by the credit card he used. I would imagine LE would have already looked into that with SS's case though.
Missing 23-year-old Boston woman found alive, police say; suspect charged with kidnapping

Just a possibility, The man in the truck may have given LE info he knew that lead to the warrant to search (someones reasonable statement would be all thats needed to get the warrant . My reason for saying this is that people tend to talk when caught by surprise. If he had any knowledge, thoughts, or was involved he probably thought he was being arrested and was terrified. One of the 1st things he said was he was on his way to talk to LE. Generally thats a way of showing submission and cooperation or appear to be on "their" side (even if it is untrue). Catching someone off guard throws them off from the planned scenario they may have rehearsed over and over in their heads if questioned in a more controlled setting. It's a tactic LE will purposefully use (though this may have been luck) to get information. I used that technique if I knew someone I was investigating for the court or was under my supervision was lying. It isn't hard to throw someone off guard and I would imagine the man in the truck got the double whammy, fear of being arrested and the shock of being stopped. Just my 2 cents.

I don't know if he called the police station before he was pulled over. I would think that would be the normal thing to do if you realize a girl is missing and you and/or your truck were seen with her. He can't claim ignorance if he said he was on his way to make a statement.

I know of a few, but they're not suitable for winter stay. The camps I know of don't have heat.

Several churches in Madison County already have cots and bedding. They open them up for people when the weather dips below 0.

Has anyone offered to let searchers stay at their house. If you have the room to spare and as long as everyone is vetted, why not? I don't mean everyone in one house but surely some people could offer a room.

I realize that she didn't go missing from Madison, but this IS her home. People who live in Paint Lick and Lancaster DO commute here for work and school. We had posters of Alex Johnson up all over town and he had no connection to Richmond at all.

I wonder if the bar she was last seen at could do a beef and beer fundraiser to raise money and also awareness. Or even a bar in that same area.

I didn't get the that sense at all. There are a million innocent ways one can put themselves in a risky situation. I never partied, rarely dated, and didn't drink alcohol or use drugs but I was naive and overly trusting of people. It wasn't until I began working in LE that I truly realized and saw how easily one can become a victim. It is very easy to be lulled into a feeling of being safe or being in denial danger can occur. People being complacent about the disappearance of SS may be putting themselves at risk by not pushing to have the case solved if SS was murdered. The killer would still be out there. The feeling of it won't happen to me can come easily and allow one to make mistakes and be at risk. JMHO
