Family still searching for answers in 1955 disappearance of World War II veteran

Leanna, 65 now, was only three years old in November of 1955, and doesn’t remember anything from that time. But she does know that on November 7, 1955 her father Duane walked out of their family home in Mason City, Iowa, and was never seen again.

Two days later, Duane’s father Roy went to the Mason City Police to file a missing persons report. He took his grandson Harold, Leanna’s half-brother, with him to file the report.

Lieutenant Rich Jensen with the Mason City Police told Dateline that, according to police records, Duane’s father Roy was the last person to see him and that was at 7:30 p.m. on November 7. Roy was unable to provide police with any meaningful details as to his son’s plans.

Duane’s car, a 1950 maroon Hudson, was found on November 10, 1955 near Willow Creek in Mason City. Police found a parking ticket dated November 8 on the car, Lt. Jensen told Dateline.

According to the case file, there was a reported sighting of Duane in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 8. There is a notation in the file that Duane told someone he was going to Chicago, but Lt. Jensen said there is no indication of who gave the police that statement. Lieutenant Jensen told Dateline there has been no activity in Duane’s case since that time, although it remains listed as an open investigation.

<SNIP>
Timothy continued his father Harold’s work, requesting military records and searching through archives for articles about his grandfather. He believes there is a small chance Duane is still alive. Mason City police have also requested government documents and dental records from that time, but Lt. Jensen told Dateline they’ve had no luck.

Duane’s social security number has been inactive since he went missing, Lt. Jensen told Dateline. The number shows no activity, including being used for employment and veterans benefits. “He just disappeared,” Lt. Jensen said.

Leanna and Timothy are continuing to search for answers in Duane’s disappearance. “My main goal is to find out what happened, and I don't even know if that's going to happen,” Leanna said. “Did he disappear, or did he get murdered, or what?”

Duane Dreher was described as being 5’11” tall with black hair and blue eyes. Duane would be 96 years old today. If you have any information, please contact the Mason City Police at (641) 421-3636

that is such a sad story.

Wanted to say I searched FamilySearch and located a Duane Dreher that passed 8/9/13 in Mason City, Iowa. Married to Marjorie. Wonder if same?

Is this the record you are talking about: FamilySearch

This is actually an index of his son's 2013 obituary and Duane is listed as his father. I know it can be confusing how familysearch shows the obituary indexing but the clue is where it says "mentioned in the record of _________" at the top. The name after that is his son's name.

graphic link.. the UID might be younger.. but I thought I would post anyway because he had usn tattoo and I know Duane was a sailor even though tattoos have not been mentioned

Wait Now IAM confused? Whose son??? Duanes father was named Roy
and Duane had a daughter Leanna
and she had a half brother named Harold.
And another son named David.
I am just getting this from the article I just posted below on this thread.

So do you think the Duane that is mentioned dying in 2013 is the Duane they were searching for????

Maybe he did just leave to start a new life. I think it was much easier for people to do that back then and keep their own name no?

Family still searching for answers in 1955 disappearance of World War II veteran

Time is running out to find out what happened to World War II Navy veteran Duane Roy Dreher. His son died in 2014, never knowing. His grandson is now carrying the torch for the family in their search for answers. Maybe someone out there heard a story -- a rumor even -- passed down through the years, of the merchant marine and father who simply vanished from Mason City, Iowa on a November day in 1955. Maybe someone will come forward after all this time and share what they know.

Time is certainly running out to find Duane Dreher alive. He would be in his mid-90s today if, by chance, there is still someone out there who knows what happened.

During World War II, Duane Roy Dreher served as a Merchant Marine on multiple ships, including the U.S.S. Stephen F. Austin, the Barbara Frietchie and the John Wanamaker, according to grandson Timothy Springer. One of Duane’s ships was even frozen in the Soviet Union for months, Springer told Dateline, and his grandfather lived in Russian seamen’s hostels waiting for the thaw.

In 1945, Duane returned home to the United States, where his wife and son, Harold were waiting. The marriage didn’t last, however, and the couple divorced in 1947.

Duane remarried shortly thereafter and had two more children, Leanna and David, in 1952 and 1953, respectively.

From NBC News, May 26, 2018

Time is running out to find out what happened to World War II Navy veteran Duane [sic] Roy Dreher. His son died in 2014, never knowing. His grandson is now carrying the torch for the family in their search for answers. Maybe someone out there heard a story — a rumor even — passed down through the years, of the merchant marine and father who simply vanished from Mason City, Iowa on a November day in 1955. Maybe someone will come forward after all this time and share what they know.

Read the full story about a DATELINE episode that aired Sunday, May 27, 2018, about the unsolved disappearance of Dwane Roy Dreher.

U.S. Navy veteran Dwane Roy Dreher, 33, went missing after last being seen around 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 7, 1955, by his father in Mason City, Iowa.

Dreher’s vehicle was found near the Winnebago River — all his belongings still inside — the following day.

According to NamUs (the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System), an unconfirmed sighting of Dreher was noted around noon on Nov. 8, 1955, the same day officials located Dreher’s vehicle.

The man who may have been Dreher was said to have been walking north on South Federal Avenue in Mason City. Reports said Dreher had mentioned that he was traveling to Chicago.

Dreher — a merchant marine — was reported missing to the Mason City Police Department on Nov. 9, 1955.

Authorities dragged the river but came up empty handed. Family and friends have not seen or heard from Dreher since his disappearance.

At the time he went missing, Dreher was described as a 33-year-old white male with blue eyes, black hair, 5-foot-11 to 6 feet tall and weighing somewhere between 150 and 200 pounds. His face was described as slightly pock marked.

He was last seen wearing a blue short jacket with a zipper front, blue trousers and brown Oxford shoes. He wore no necktie, hat or cap.

NamUs reports that a DNA sample is available but not yet submitted, and that fingerprint information is available elsewhere.

Convoy trips took Dreher all over the world
Dreher, a coxswain with the United States Navy Reserve (then called the United States Naval Reserve), traveled to many countries during his convoy trips, at one point using his own ship and personal gun to down two jerry planes. He would later dedicate the two downed planes to two relatives he lost in the war.

A Mason City Globe Gazette article published June 18, 1945, announced Dreher’s return home from the “Convoy Trip to ETO.” The brief article, which contained no byline, read:

Dwane Roy Dreher, coxswain USNR, has just returned from a convoy trip during which, he reports, his ship and own personal gun got 2 jerry planes.

The trip took him to Germany, Belgium, France, Holland, England, Scotland, Ireland and Russia.

I would like to dedicate the 2 planes we downed to my 2 relatives killed in the war,” said Dreher. They are his cousin, Lt. Robert W. Lewis, and his brother-in-law, Warren W. Wolff, seaman 2/c, both from Mason City.

Dreher reported that he had talked to some Germans, prisoners of the allies, who had said they were sorry to hear that Roosevelt had died. He was their only chance for the rehabilitation of Germany, they had said.

On a former trip his convey had got 9 subs and assisted in the sinking of the Von Tirpitz along the Norwegian coast.

Besides the places named, his convey trips have taken him to Cuba, Panama, South Africa, Iran, Iraq, Arabia and India.

~ Mason City Globe Gazette, June 18, 1945

Eight months earlier, The Globe Gazette published a short news brief Tuesday, Oct. 17, 1944, announcing Dreher’s return home from Russia — its highlights both poignant and telling:

HOME FROM RUSSIA–Dwane Roy Dreher, coxswain, is in Mason City on a 2 weeks leave, visiting his wife and family and his 5 month old baby whom he has never seen. Coxswain Dreher is back from a “long and unusual” trip to North Russia. He has brought back many souvenirs and relics from there and tells of strange and interesting customs and manner of living and hardships endured by the allies. His wife is the former Marjorie Wolff, Mason City. The family lives at 1213 6th S.W.

In this June 18, 1945, article published by the Mason City Globe Gazette, Dwane Dreher dedicates two recent downed planes to two relatives he lost in the war.

Dreher’s daughter, Leanna Dreher, was just a toddler when her father went missing, and in May 1999 began using Ancestry.com message boards to see if she could uncover any further information about her father’s life. Leanna said he’d been a merchant marine, was told he’d been a good dancer and a good card player.

Leanna said a few old rumors had floated around, such as that her father may have drowned himself or that he won too much money playing cards at a local card hall. She wondered if perhaps that incident had upset somebody and resulted in foul play.

Another story she’d heard concerned a couple of guys looking for her father the night he disappeared, mad because he had been messing around with their sister.

Questions remain about the veracity of whether Dreher had planned a trip to Chicago.

Almost exactly one year prior to his disappearance, The Globe Gazette reported Dreher’s request for a marriage license in Mason City on Monday, Nov. 15, 1954.

It sounds like he was a part of the U.S. Navy Armed Guard, these men manned various guns installed on cargo ships during WW II. So they were extra protection against attack by U-boats and German aircraft especally on the runs to Murmansk, Russia.

Also, he may have suffered from what we know s shop as PTSD. Also, did he ever seek medical treatment from the VA. Also do you have any of his military service records. There were several VA hospitals in the Chicago area at the time.

The other thought is that PTSD is a trigger for a psychological disorder called ‘Dissociative Fugue’, which causes a form of amnesia, where the person completely forgets their name and quite often flees a source of trauma, such as marital discord, a death in the family.

Quite often they will adopt a new name. There are recent cases of this and others dating back many years. A guy was missing for 23 years with this disorder in Australia. He was actually found a week before a hearing to dclare him deceased. He had remembered his name and applied for their version of Medicare. They found an entry in the records.

It would be interesting if he exhibited any signs of strange or odd behavior. Also, did anyone track down the woman mentioned in the marriage license application in November 1954.

I checked Ancestry and found a South Dakota marriage record for a Dwane Dreher (30), who married Lois Irene Genzler (18), on June 6, 1952.

However, a Family Tree posted on Ancestry, shows that Lois Irene Genzler was born on October 6, 1936. So that would make her like (16) years old.

That might explain him getting a marriage license in Mason City, Iowa to marry his now (18) year old wife Lois Dreher.

Also, the Family Tree entry shows that he may have lived in San Diego. California in 1953 or 1954. But there was no link to an official record to support it. A David Allen Dreher, supposedly was born there on December 1, 1953. He died on November 6, 1977, at the age of (23).

    It makes me wonder.

<Snipped for space>

Great article but the year his son died is incorrect. Duane's son, Harold, died in 2013, not 2014. Link and screenshot of the top of Duane's son's obituary is in my post above this one. The Grandson mentioned is Timothy (Harold's son) who is also mentioned in Harold's obituary and first article in the first post of this thread.

ETA: It seems that Harold's year of death was incorrect in one article and it got repeated as 2014 in subsequent articles. I see why this made things confusing but it seems to be a typo only in the news articles about Duane's disappearance. The death records show Harold died in 2013.
MOO.
