Two New Orleans police officers face battery charges, firing after attack

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Two New Orleans police officers are charged with battery and could lose their jobs after a bar fight that put a man in the hospital.

A statement from the New Orleans Police Department says the officers were the aggressors in the altercation.
. . .
The department says formal termination proceedings against the two will begin Wednesday, and an investigation will determine whether more serious charges are warranted.
. . .
The officers have been identified as Spencer Sutton and John Galman.

The victim, George Gomez, has been released from the hospital.

A Hispanic man in New Orleans says two white off-duty police officers who took issue with his camouflage clothing called him a “fake American” before assaulting him outside a bar, leaving his face bloodied and extremely swollen.

Jorge Gomez told WVUE he just wants an apology from the two rookie cops who were arrested and now face battery charges in the early Tuesday attack outside of a South St. Patrick Street bar.

“He didn’t like the way I dressed,” Gomez told the station, referring to the military-style camouflage short and pants he wore at the time.

NOPD officers 'took turns, like a wrestling match': report details July 24 beating

Two now-fired New Orleans police officers accused of beating a man outside a Mid-City bar on July 24 each had been served 5 liquor shots, and between two and five beers before the fight that led to the officers' arrests, according to a NOPD report.

Sutton told investigators with NOPD's Public Integrity Bureau that Galman, who he said was his "roommate and friend," was a military veteran and questioned Gomez about his service because he believed Gomez was "stealing valor."

The NOPD report, which became publicly available on Thursday (Aug. 16), states investigators believe the officers were the aggressors in the first of two physical altercations, right outside the Mid-City Yacht Club. It does not expressly say who the aggressor was in a second altercation a couple of blocks down Baudin Street from the bar.
