Craig Stebic Hasn't Spoken With Police About Wife's Disappearance In Nearly 2 Months

One day after a local television reporter lost her job over questions about her conduct in covering the story of a missing Plainfield woman, investigators are still hoping to interview Lisa Stebic’s husband about the case.

The man heading up the investigation into the disappearance of Lisa Stebic says there’s one person they’d like to interview most: Craig Stebic.

“Obviously, the person we want to interview the most is Mr. Stebic,” said Plainfield Police Chief Don Bennett. But Craig Stebic is refusing to speak to police and Bennett says he hasn’t spoken to police since day nine of the investigation.

Now, more than nine weeks after the Plainfield mother of two disappeared without a trace, police believe the last people to have seen her alive could be key to finding out what happened.

Ethical Debate Continues Over Jacobson's Departure

CHICAGO -- A television reporter videotaped wearing a swimsuit at the home of a man whose estranged wife is missing says she was fired because she's a woman who aggressively pursued a source on her day off.

But some say former WMAQ-TV reporter Amy Jacobson lost touch with ethical reality when she went swimming with her kids at Craig Stebic's suburban Plainfield home.

Jacobson's actions and subsequent dismissal ignited a debate Wednesday around newsrooms, Internet blogs and water coolers: Was she held to a different standard because of her gender? Isn't it a reporter's job to cultivate sources? Was her bikini the issue or that she had her two young sons in tow?

Fox News is reporting the press conference will be at 4:00 p.m.

Craig Stebic, the estranged husband of missing suburban Chicago mom Lisa Stebic, is expected to be named a person of interest in her disappearance, FOX News has learned.

Officials from the Plainfield, Ill., police department plan to give a press conference at 4:30 p.m. ET to give an update to the case.

In the days after his wife was reported missing, Craig Stebic spoke to a reporter in tears, clutching a crumpled tissue and saying his wife Lisa would never voluntarily leave their two children.

Now, police are narrowing their investigation to mark Stebic as a "person of interest" in Lisa Stebic's April 30 disappearance.

Authorities plan to make that announcement Thursday, the first time they have named a person of interest in the case.

Police have called a 3:30 press conference to provide details.

Plainfield police said this afternoon they consider Craig Stebic a "person of interest" in the disappearance of his wife, Lisa, who has been missing more than two months.

Police held a 3:30 p.m. news conference to provide an update on the disappearance of Lisa Stebic, who left behind two school-age children when she went missing from her home on April 30.

The Plainfield Police Department has made two attempts to get Craig Stebic's permission to interview his son and daughter at a children's advocacy center regarding the disappearance of their mother, Lisa Stebic.

However, Craig Stebic's attorney has advised him not to grant the interview.
"It is the belief of the Plainfield police and the Will County State's Attorney's Office that the children may have valuable information that will assist in the investigation," said Police Chief Don Bennett during Thursday's press conference. "It is also the belief of these two agencies that the children, if allowed, would welcome an opportunity to assist in the effort to locate their mother."

"Craig has always been a person of interest. They're kidding themselves if they say otherwise"

~snip~

Investigators have concluded Lisa was not involved in an accident or forcibly abducted from her house. They believe she was a victim of foul play, and that Craig Stebic knows something about her disappearance.

So far, police say, Craig has offered little assistance in the case and has not participated in organized searches. He has declined to take a polygraph test.

How many times did Amy Jacobson go to the Stebic house? Did she share information with police? Let's ask her!

Amy Jacobson this afternoon confirmed reports that her bosses at Ch. 5 accused her “of getting too close to the police” during her investigation of the Stebic case.

This accusation came in the context of the conversations she had earlier this week that resulted in parting ways with the station, she said.

In a phone call, Jacobson told me that, on occasion, she would share information first with police as she was reporting on the April 30 disappearance of Plainfield resident Lisa Stebic.

“Here’s a good example,” she said. “The police couldn’t talk to (Lisa Stebic's husband) Craig Stebic. So when a story ran in the Naperville Sun saying there were blood droplets on a tarp found in his car, I went to his door with a cameraman. I said `Where did the blood come from?’ He said it was animal blood. So I called the police and told them what he said. Then I did my live shot.”

AFTER 10 WEEKS WITH NO SUSPECTS IN A MOTHER'S DISAPPEARANCE, PLAINFIELD POLICE HAVE NAMED THE MISSING WOMAN'S HUSBAND A PERSON OF INTEREST

~snip~

Over the past 10 weeks, investigators have concluded Lisa was not involved in an accident or forcibly abducted from her house. They believe she was a victim of foul play, and that Craig Stebic knows something about her disappearance.

Naming Craig as a suspect does not mean investigators will necessarily be able to interview him or his children, said Police Chief Don Bennett. What changes, he said, is that the investigation focuses on Craig.

"Based upon our investigation, we need to bring the fact to light that Craig Stebic is a person of interest, and that he has some knowledge of the disappearance of Lisa," Bennett said.

This week, CBS 2 has gotten more phone calls and e-mails than usual, and that's an understatement. Viewers reacted strongly -- both in support and protest -- of the Amy Jacobson videotape. We want you to know the inside story.

The pictures of former NBC 5 reporter Amy Jacobson and Craig Stebic went from being the talk of Chicago to the talk of the nation since their release Tuesday morning. And one of the biggest questions is how the video came to be.

Until Thursday night, CBS 2 avoided talking about that, to protect the identities of both the homeowner who gave the station permission to film on his property and our CBS 2 photojournalist who shot the video.

While police call him a suspect in his wife's disappearance and reporters have camped outside his house, Craig Stebic plans to take things "day by day" and live with his children as normally as possible, his lawyer said.

Attorney Dion Davi, who has advised Stebic not to talk to the media, said he hopes police find another lead in the case of missing mother Lisa Stebic because focusing on Craig seems like a waste of time.

"Especially given the fact that there isn't, to my knowledge, anything that points to him other than the fact that he is the last person to have come forward and say that he saw her," Davi said.

Reporter Amy Jacobson confirmed Friday that her sudden departure this week from WMAQ-Ch. 5 came after her former bosses accused her "of getting too close to the police" while reporting on the case of missing Plainfield mother Lisa Stebic.

Jacobson told Tribune columnist Eric Zorn that on occasion she shared information with Plainfield police investigating Lisa's disappearance.

"You give news to get news," she said. "That's always how it's been."

Memorial not meant to offend, but Lisa is Jewish

A small white cross placed outside the Stebic home in Plainfield caused a commotion Friday morning.

The cross appeared in the front lawn, accompanied by a tiny brunette doll resembling Lisa Stebic. A newspaper clipping with the missing mom's picture was taped to it, and the words "Where is she?" and "Ten weeks have gone by, and we still cry for you" were written on it in red marker.
