Breaking: Police Searching For Human Remains In Uniondale
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Police on Long Island say they are searching for human remains they believe were buried in Uniondale and may have been a victim of gang violence.

According to authorities in Nassau County, police are searching for the unidentified person in an area east of Kellenberg Memorial High School.

The search began around 8 a.m. Wednesday. It is currently not known how police were alerted to search for the remains.

"At least 25 bodies have been found on Long Island since January 2016, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

The MS-13 gang has been blamed for all of the deaths, according to the AP.

It is not known if MS-13 is the gang eyed in Wednesday’s investigation."

The search happened despite temperatures approaching 100 degrees.

"A "self-admitted MS-13 member" pleaded not guilty Thursday to a murder charge, with authorities alleging he and others in the gang "viciously and barbarically" wielded machetes in the 2017 killing of an unidentified male whose remains were discovered Wednesday in East Meadow.

Carlos Benitez-Hernandez, 21, of Uniondale, appeared briefly in Hempstead District Court for an arraignment where Judge Elizabeth Fox-McDonough remanded him back into custody without bail.

Nassau police said Benitez-Hernandez and at least four other members of the crime syndicate with ties to El Salvador took part in the Aug. 13, 2017, slaying in a sump east of the Meadowbrook State Parkway."

Carlos Benitez-Hernandez, 21, was arraigned Thursday on a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of a teen, who authorities did not identify. Benitez-Hernandez was arrested Wednesday after authorities uncovered human remains in a shallow grave in East Meadow on Long Island.

Five alleged MS-13 members appeared in court this week as suspects in the August 2017 slaying of Carlos Rivas-Majano, 22, of Uniondale, who was found in a shallow grave off Glenn Curtiss Boulevard in East Meadow one year after his death. Two MS-13 gang members will spend decades behind bars after they were sentenced for their roles in the August 2017 machete murder of a 22-year-old man whose body was eventually discovered in a wooded area in Uniondale, according to prosecutors.


Luis Alejandro Varela, 24 and from Mineola, as well as William Reyes-Fuentes, 27 and from Uniondale, pleaded guilty on June 24 to charges of murder in the second degree and conspiracy in the second degree in connection to the hacking death of Carlos Rivas-Majano, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. Varela was sentenced to 21 years to life in prison and Reyes-Fuentes was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. Both are said to be members of the Downtown Criminals clique of MS-13.
