Hooray, Shuyee Lee is back on the case!
Wonder who with be on the stand today. The defence did intend to call the reporter who interviewed LM about Homolka and said he thought there was something wrong with him and he needed help (but he thought it was substance abuse so maybe the defence will choose not to call him after all!), Romeo Salta (the lawyer LM e-mailed about Manny), a tape of French police saying LM claimed to have been raped in Paris before the murder, and the psychiatrist who.diagnosed LM with BPD before the murder.
Yes...I understand Joe Warmington was there a while ago. His fellow sun columnist Michelle Mandel tweeted about it. But it appears he did not end up taking the stand after all. Here was the "expected list of defence witnesses" that the Sun posted.
Expected defence witnesses:
- Donald Newman, Magnotta's father. Leclair describes Newman as "schizophrenic" and "a bit of a mercurial person" who once brought Magnotta to a psychiatrist because he "thinks something is wrong with him."
- Joe Warmington, QMI Agency columnist:
Interviewed Magnotta on camera in 2007. Magnotta had come to see Warmington to deny he was dating schoolgirl killer Karla Homolka. The defence says Warmington was concerned about Magnotta's behaviour and wanted to send Magnotta to the hospital because, according to the defence, "he thought there was something wrong with this guy, but nothing was done."
- Dr. Tan, general practitioner, Montreal:
"Followed Magnotta through three different clinics" and "will testify ... about Mr. Magnotta hearing voices, feeling persecuted."
- Dr. Joel Paris, psychiatrist, Jewish General Hospital, Montreal:
Gave one-hour assessment of Magnotta in April 2012, one month before murder. Diagnosed Magnotta with borderline personality disorder but prescribed no medication.
- Dr. Renee Roy, psychiatrist, Pinel psychiatric institute, Montreal:
Magnotta's current treating psychiatrist.
- Romeo Salta, New York lawyer:
Says Magnotta claimed PETA was hunting him and that a man named "Manny" made him do things.
The following defence witnesses gave pre-recorded testimony in Europe during a "rogatory commission" in the summer:
- German psychiatrist who treated Magnotta in a Berlin jail following his arrest.
- Paris police officer who testified that Magnotta was in Paris prior to the killing and complained to police "that two guys raped him and stole from him."
