SLC residents talk about neighbor charged with MacKenzie Lueck’s murder
TC has lived next door to Ayoola Ajayi for a little over two years and never expected he would be charged with murder.

“He came across to me as your everyday neighbor, somebody who was very professional, very friendly,” TC said.

SB lives one more door down and says he’s not surprised after his interactions with Ajayi. The man he knows as “AJ” was egotistical, quiet and aloof.

SB said he remembers the community would remind Ajayi to not water his lawn in the middle of the day or put cement in the recycling bin.

“He says, 'I can water when I want,'” SB recalled. “'Who’s going to do anything about it?'”

Investigators tracking her cell phone discovered that 23-year-old Mackenzie Lueck and the man expected to be charged with her murder were both in the park where she was last seen on June 17 within a minute of one another.

That was around the time Lueck's phone stopped receiving data or location services, police said.

After Lueck disappeared, the suspect originally denied knowing what she looked like, Brown said. But several pictures of her were found on his phone, and the "digital footprint" has continued even after the arrest, police said.

An Instagram account that Lueck's sorority sister confirmed belongs to the missing student followed another user on or about Wednesday, CNN verified.

Brown confirmed that investigators are looking into the activity on the account.
"This is a digital forensic investigation," he said. "This is covering computers, cell phones, IP addresses, URLs, texting apps."

Investigators also found forensic evidence after they searched Ajayi's home and property Wednesday, police said. As they did, his neighbors told police they saw him using gasoline to burn something in his backyard on June 17 and 18, Brown said.

"A forensic excavation of the burn area was conducted, which resulted in the finding of several charred items that were consistent with personal items of Mackenzie Lueck," Brown told reporters.

Police also discovered charred material that was determined to be female human tissue consistent with Lueck's DNA profile, he said. A mattress investigators have been trying to find has been located, police tweeted Friday night, without providing additional details.

Police said Friday that all communications with Lueck's phone ceased around 3 a.m. that morning -- the same time they said she left the park with the suspect.

Who was MacKenzie Lueck? A mentor, a beach and animal lover and an empowered woman
She used to bike to the Pacific Ocean. Years later, she’d re-create those days by putting on her bikini and basking in the sun that shines on the high-altitude desert that is Salt Lake City.

As a student at the University of Utah, she expressed feminist opinions and left one of the major political parties to register with a conservative third party.

She competed on the swim team and played water polo at her high school in Southern California. At U. football games, she cheered in the student section known as the MUSS.

“She's like a nurturer,” KS, one of Lueck’s sorority sisters at Alpha Chi Omega, said Wednesday. “She's almost a mother to me. She is one of those people [who is] always cooking for you. She wants to make sure you’re getting fed. She wants to make sure if you need a drink, that you have a drink.”

The friends also started a school club on breast cancer awareness. Besides being a worthy cause, CB said, it was a way to boost their extracurricular resumes for college applications. The activism also represented an early example of Lueck showing an appreciation for women’s issues.

Alpha Chi Omega consumed much of Lueck’s free time, her friends said. Besides mandating that members maintain a 2.5 GPA, the chapter requires them to attend a certain number of social events and participate in philanthropic endeavors. The chapter’s charity work focuses on domestic violence awareness and prevention.

The sorority also gave Lueck her social circle. A semester after Lueck was a Little, KS pledged to Alpha Chi Omega and selected Lueck as her Big.

In one of her final Facebook posts, Lueck celebrated the anniversary of women’s suffrage. Her Instagram profile promoted “free the nips.”

KS said Lueck didn’t necessarily want women to go without bras or expose their nipples. Instead, the phrase can be used to promote the idea that women shouldn’t be shamed for their bodies.

Lueck herself liked to spend free time on warm Salt Lake City days outside, enjoying the sun in a bikini, Stoner said — not that there was a lot of free time. Besides school and the sorority, Lueck held jobs. KS said her friend was a personal assistant to a family. At the time of her death, she worked at a Salt Lake City biological testing laboratory.

KS, who graduated in May with a degree in psychology, said Lueck appeared to be taking awhile to graduate because she sometimes reduced her class load to part time so she could also work.

Friends say they saw no personality changes in Lueck through the years. She continued to enjoy animals. She had hedgehogs, guinea pigs and a cat at the time of her death.

KS remembers a night in December. Lueck had been dating a man and hadn’t been spending much time with friends. All of a sudden, Lueck texted Stoner and invited her to go to a Main Street restaurant. KS said Lueck even offered to pay — perhaps because she still saw herself as KS’s Big.

Lueck’s family has declined interview requests. The Lueck friends who spoke to The Tribune have said they do not know Ajayi or why Lueck would have been meeting someone at 3 a.m. in a park in North Salt Lake, as Salt Lake City police have said occurred.

Mackenzie Lueck: A timeline of what we know about the Utah student's disappearance
Monday, June 17, 1:35 a.m. — After attending a family funeral in California, Lueck’s flight arrives at Salt Lake City International Airport.

Monday, June 17, 2:09 a.m. — Lueck departs flight from California. It takes about a half-hour for her to get off the plane and arrive at baggage claim.

Monday, June 17, 2:40 a.m. — Lueck gets into a Lyft.

Monday, June 17, about 3 a.m. — Lueck seen for the last time when the Lyft driver drops her off at Hatch Park, 50 Center St., North Salt Lake.

Thursday, June 20, 4 p.m. — Family notifies police that Lueck had not been heard from since Sunday night.

Friday, Saturday, June 21-22 — Friends and family of Lueck spread word of her disappearance by handing out flyers around Salt Lake City.

Beware of fraudulent fundraising accounts for Mackenzie Lueck
After the tragic death of University of Utah student, fraudulent fundraising accounts have popped up online.

Some of these accounts may claim to cover the funeral costs for 23-year-old Mackenzie Lueck. Police said the Lueck was abducted and murdered and her remains burned in the suspect’s backyard.

Beginning about 1:42 - Reporter Ashley Kewish describes her conversation with a friend of MacKenzie's (who also met her online) who said he and MacKenzie had talked about AA before. MacKenzie told him what she was doing, that she and AA had a relationship/arrangement, and the friend told ML that he had a bad feeling about AA. The reporter asked him if he's talked to the police and he said he's been in contact with them since the beginning.

Investigators tracking her cell phone discovered that 23-year-old Mackenzie Lueck and the man expected to be charged with her murder were both in the park where she was last seen on June 17 within a minute of one another.

That was around the time Lueck's phone stopped receiving data or location services, police said.

Ayoola Ajayi, 31, was arrested Friday and is expected to be charged with aggravated murder. He also faces charges of aggravated kidnapping, obstruction of justice and desecration of a body, according to Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown.

A look into the life of MacKenzie Lueck’s accused murderer

Prior to his arrest Friday morning, the 31-year-old legal resident who was born and raised in Nigeria had no criminal history in the state of Utah.

However, in a statement to media Friday, North Park Police said Ajayi was investigated as the suspect in a rape complaint back in 2014, but the woman did not wish to pursue charges.

The statement reads:

“Ayoola Adisa Ajayi (DOB 4/22/1988), who is in custody as a suspect of the Salt Lake City Police Department in relation to the disappearance of MacKenzie Lueck, lived in North Logan, Utah from 2013-2015, according to our local police records. In 2014, North Park Police Department investigated a Sex Offense/Rape complaint with Mr. Ajayi listed as the suspect. The adult female victim in this incident did not wish to pursue charges in the matter."

Aside from minor traffic violations, Ajayi was evicted from the Northridge Apartments in North Salt Lake in 2016. That complex happens to be across the street from Hatch Park — where MacKenzie went missing and where GPS evidence linked Lueck’s and Ajayi’s cellphones at the park within a minute of each other, around 3 a.m. Monday morning, just before Lueck’s phone was turned off.

Former prosecutor: MacKenzie Lueck's accused killer could face death penalty if convicted

The next step for Ajayi will be an initial appearance in court, at which time he could announce he has hired a defense attorney or could ask the court to appoint a public defender.

Ajayi will eventually face an arraignment hearing, at which time prosecutors would have a 60-day window to decide if they wanted to pursue the death penalty.

Morgan estimates there are approximately a dozen attorneys in the state who are qualified to handle death penalty cases.

Mackenzie Lueck's friends remember slain U. student as 'outgoing and positive'

“I will remember her as a ball of light. That’s what she was. A blond bubble of happiness,” said MG, one of Lueck’s other sorority sisters. “I’ll never forget seeing her face when she became a part of our little family. I hope her story will inspire people to speak out about domestic violence and to never stop fighting for the people they love.”

CR said Lueck was the type of person to make the best out of every situation and would always be willing to go out of her way to help someone, even if she had never met them before.

“(She) was the kind of person who would … have a good time no matter what she was doing and have everyone involved, enjoying themselves,” CR added.

Lueck’s classmates remembered her as a dedicated and hardworking student who cared about her schoolwork.

“We (were) both going into the medical profession, so we were kind of study buddies,” Lueck’s sorority sister and classmate KR told KSL TV Thursday. “(She was) very hard-working, very dedicated to her studies. ... She (was) such a sweet soul, and very personable. Very much a people person.”

“She was really nice, and people on campus can be closed off and not very social, but she wasn't like that," AP said. "She was really nice, always said ‘Hi,’ wanted to know my first name, wanted to get my number to see if she could study (with me). That's not really common at the U., … so for her to do that, you know, she's nice.”
