The spokesperson for the North Salt Lake Police Dept. said it's unclear if the surveillance cameras at the park were ever operational. Even though numerous signs say the area is being videotaped. Sure would have helped in this case @KSLcom @kslnewsradio @KSL5TV#missingperson

Doubt said the Lyft driver who dropped off Lueck told investigators she did not seem in distress when she met the person at the park at around 3 a.m. The Lyft driver has been cleared as a potential suspect, police said.

Lueck’s parents said they last heard from her around 1 a.m. on June 17. They said their daughter texted them and told them her flight landed, but they haven't heard from her since.

Last Thursday, Lueck's family reported her missing.

NORTH SALT LAKE — Missing University of Utah student Mackenzie "Kenzie" Lueck was last seen making contact with a person in a vehicle at Hatch Park in North Salt Lake about 3 a.m. on June 17, according to Salt Lake City police.

But investigators still don't know if Lueck is in trouble or if she is purposely trying to not be found.

Salt Lake police released a few more details Monday afternoon about the disappearance of the 23-year-old U. student, who has been missing for a week. The disappearance has captured national attention.

Lueck is a senior at the U. from El Segundo, California, who is enrolled part time. She is majoring in kinesiology and pre-nursing and minoring in health, and has been enrolled at the school since 2014.

She arrived at the Salt Lake City International Airport about 1:35 a.m. on June 17 after attending a family funeral in California, said Salt Lake Assistant Police Chief Tim Doubt. She got in a Lyft about 2:40 a.m. that drove her to Hatch Park, 50 Center St., in North Salt Lake, he said. She arrived at the park just before 3 a.m.

According to the Lyft driver, "Mackenzie was met at Hatch Park by an individual in a vehicle. The Lyft driver left Mackenzie at the park with that person and stated that Mackenzie did not appear to be in any type of distress," Doubt said.

Police have not verified a make or model of the vehicle or have a good description of the driver, according to Doubt. He declined to say whether Lueck gave any indication to the Lyft driver who she was meeting or why she was meeting that person at a park at 3 a.m.

Lueck lives in an apartment in Salt Lake City off the U. campus, Doubt said.

Former SLC police chief weighs in on search for missing U of U student

SALT LAKE CITY — As the search for missing University of Utah student MacKenzie Lueck stretches past a week, Salt Lake City Police are trying to answer a number of questions.

“Does MacKenzie have an alternate phone that she has used or is using? Who did MacKenzie meet in North Salt Lake City? Does MacKenzie have any social media accounts we don’t know about,” said Assistant Salt Lake City Police Chief Tim Doubt.

Another question police are trying to answer: does MacKenzie want to be found?

“She has no obligation to call the police department or anyone else and say, 'Here's where I went,'” said former SLC Police Chief Chris Burbank.

Burbank says a challenge for investigators is balancing Lueck's right to privacy with her family’s concern. Because of that balance, he says the investigation initially starts in public spaces, like Facebook posts, comments to friends, etc. But as the investigation unfolds, it may be necessary to get search warrants to push into more personal areas of her life.

“In this circumstance, wouldn’t it be tragic if this young woman is in fact in danger and we didn’t do enough?” Burbank said.

MacKenzie Lueck is a 23-year-old University of Utah student who has been missing since June 17 after she disappeared following a Lyft ride from Salt Lake City International Airport. Lueck was returning to Utah after a trip home to go to her grandmother’s funeral in the Los Angeles, California, area, her family and friends say. Police have confirmed that they are investigating her disappearance as a missing person case.

The Salt Lake City Police Department said in a press release that Lueck was last seen on Monday, June 17. She was reported missing on Thursday, June 20, by family. Police said Luecke landed at the airport at 1:35 a.m. and texted her parents at 2:01 a.m. to say she had arrived there. She took a Lyft rideshare at 2:42 from the airport to a park in North Salt Lake. Police and her family earlier said the text was sent at 1 a.m., but that has been updated.

Police said at a June 24 press conference that interviews with the Lyft driver revealed Lueck met someone in another vehicle at Hatch Park in North Salt Lake when the rideshare driver dropped her off at 2:59 a.m. Police declined to release details about the make and model of the car or a description of the driver that Lueck met because they have not confirmed those details and do not want to put out possible misinformation.

“Detectives have spoken with the Lyft driver and learned that MacKenzie was met at Hatch Park by an individual in a vehicle. The Lyft driver left MacKenzie at the park with that person and stated that MacKenzie did not appear to be in any type of distress.

The Lueck family said in a statement, “Our primary goal is to find Mackenzie and bring her home. Her family is grateful for the concern, prayers and the tireless efforts of the Salt Lake City Police and members of the community.” Her family added in a post on Facebook, “MacKenzie, if you can hear us, your family and friends are looking for you and are concerned for your safety. Please reach out to anyone so we can get you home.”

Police have been searching for Lueck, while her family, college friends and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ward where she is a member, have been aiding in the search, passing out flyers in Salt Lake City and posting about her disappearance on social media.

On June 24, Salt Lake City Police said they have set up a tip-line for information about Lueck. “We’re not sure what the case is at this point,” Salt Lake Police Sergeant Brandon Shearer told the Deseret News. “We’ve still not found any evidence that she is in danger, that she has been harmed, specifically.” He said there is no evidence a crime has been committed, but they are “very concerned” because she has disappeared without a trace.

Lueck was at home in El Segundo for her grandmother’s funeral. Her maternal grandmother, G W S, died June 10. Her funeral was held June 15 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in El Segundo.

Kenzie Lueck’s last Instagram post before her disappearance was about her grandmother’s death. Along with photos of her grandmother, grandfather and mother, she wrote, “I’m sure many have already heard, heaven gained an angel on Monday. My grandmother, papa Gerry, was a hero to many. She was selfless and perfect. I never imagined this day coming, but heaven couldn’t wait for her. I love you and I’ll see you in a life time.”
