Mad Butcher killings in Fayette County 1962-64

Possible victims

Bob Mack Agee-missing since February 1962, Was going to electrical school in Chicago and came home to WV to visit his mother who was in a nursing home. He was believed to have been hitch-hiking back to Kingston from the nursing home. When he didn't arrive, his friends thought he had returned to Chicago. He has never been seen again.

Ernest Esker "Slick" Gwinn-went missing July 3, 1962, his skull was found with bullet hole in it May 28, 1963. Age 76 Oak Hill, Fayette County. Police believe his skull was found near Thurmond. Last seen at his landlord’s diner, Four Minute Lunch, in Oak Hill near his boarding house.

Sammy Smith-missing since October 20, 1962, worked at Four Minute Lunch diner. Last seen at Top Hat Drive Inn after hitching a ride after work. Someone saw him walking toward a dirt road to his parents' house in Scarbro.

Mike Rogers-went missing December 19, 1962, remains found December 26, 1962. Age 19 Oak Hill, Fayette County. Last seen at the east end of Oak Hill near the entrance of Salem Road. Body was found cut into 13 pieces and scattered about Gauley Mountain near Chimney Corner, Gauley Bridge, Fayette County

Lou Louis Bennett-went missing July 27, 1963, remains found September 1965 Age 40 Oak Hill, Fayette County. Body found along railroad tracks near Minden, Fayette County. The body believed to have been blown to pieces by dynamite. Due to the illness of Bennett and his depression, it is unclear if he committed suicide or was a victim of The Mad Butcher.

Shirley Gene Arthur-November 22, Age 33 Oak Hill, Fayette County. Last seen hitching a ride from home in Sophia, Raleigh County. to parents home in Mt. Hope, Fayette County.

Sgt. James Lee Haynes-missing since December 7, 1963, was last seen hitch-hiking to his parents' home in Saulsville to deliver Christmas presents.Investigators believe he may have been killed by three men with whom he had an altercation at a tavern the day he disappeared. It is believed that the three men ran him over with their car in Raleigh County, drove to Wyoming County, and buried his body in a large hollow on Bolt Mountain.During a search of the area, James' billfold and Army dog tags were located. Bloody rags were found in a hollow tree stump. James' body was not located.In 1971, an arrest was made in the case but charges were dropped due to lack of evidence. James was declared dead one year after his disappearance.
