Malaysian authorities have rescued hundreds of children they suspect of being physically and sexually abused in care homes linked to an Islamic business group.

Police Inspector-General Razarudin Husain said 402 children, aged between one and 17, were rescued from 20 charity homes in the states of Selangor and Negri Sembilan on Wednesday, local time.

The morning raids involved almost 1,000 personnel from police and other agencies.

"Child victims and religious sentiments were used to gather sympathy and funds from the outside," he said.

Preliminary investigations also revealed that these children are not orphans. Many were placed in these homes as infants, with their parent’s knowledge and subjected to indoctrination under the guise of religious education, a practice Razarudin condemned as harmful.

He did not rule out the possibility of deaths linked to the syndicate's activities and added that a detailed investigation would be conducted into the matter.

The articles state that the children placed in these group homes were the children of GISB employees.

First impression, this is all very cult-y. FLDS, Children of God, Scientology SeaOrg... all have a thing about separating families and indoctrinating the kids. And most cults that do that tend to have deep rooted cultures of physical and sexual abuse of children, too.

That's so sad. In this day and age, you'd think we'd be past this kind of thing, but here it is again. :(

I just hope the children they rescued are able to get past the abuse and lead happy lives.

Ayob Khan said investigations revealed that the company's modus operandi was to set up welfare home to collect donations.

"There is also information suggesting that they do not contribute to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), do not pay salaries, and impose quarantine measures if members commit minor offences.

"Their members come from all walks of life, including professionals. Their influence is widespread," he said.
