London kidnapping: Two-year-old girl missing after father's car stolen in Newham

A two-year-old girl is missing after a car she was a passenger in was stolen in East London.

Maria, a two-year-old Romanian girl, was in the front passenger seat when her father met with an unknown man to arrange selling his car on Sunday afternoon.

The man jumped in the vehicle and drove away.

The car, a black Audi A5, registration number FY58UAZ, was later found abandoned nearby in Hatherway Crescent in Newham without the child inside.

Police have appealed to the public for help to trace the girl, who was wearing a white top and red bottoms.

She is now considered as a high-risk missing person by Newham police, who are leading the search.

The person who took the car is described as an Asian man of slim build and dressed in black clothing.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the girl, or who has information that may assist police, should call 999 immediately.

Alternatively Crimestoppers can be called on 0800 555 111.

Absolute insanity - a two-year-old girl called Maria has been kidnapped in London

A man stole her father's car, with the girl inside, after claiming he was interested in buying it. The car has been abandoned but she wasn't in it

Update: police have given the girl's full name as Maria Tudricai and said she is just 17 months old

Surname correction:

Police have issued a correction, saying Maria's second name is Tudorica

There's not as much CCTV in that part of London as it's one of the outer boroughs. Since he drove off at speed there are a good few speed cameras and red light cameras but since they've already found the car that may not be very useful unless it picked up his face.

Edited to add: by 'not as much' CCTV I mean relative to central London. There is still CCTV in the area.

I wonder if the car or child was the target?

As the thief would not have expected there to be a child in the car, it sounds like the car was the target. Why the thief would still take the car when there's a child in the front passenger seat is a big question. Usually in cases where a car is stolen with a child inside, the child is in the back seat and not obvious to the thief when they take the vehicle.

And why would you put the child in the front passenger seat if you know someone's coming over to view the car and might want to drive around the block with you, wouldn't you want to be in the driver's seat and have the potential buyer in the passenger seat?

Why wasn't the child in the car when it was found abandoned? Why did they abandon the car in that place? It's not like they only just noticed there was a child in the seat next to them? If the thief got out the car on foot, did they walk somewhere carrying the baby with them? Where have they taken her?

Maybe it's an error in the report saying that Maria was in the front and not the back?

I wish LE would put out a message to the thief to tell him where to take the baby and leave her somewhere safe. Take her to the closest hospital, leave her at the desk and run. Anything so that she gets to a safe place where she can be checked over and cared for and then reunited with her parents.

Okaaaaaay. I thought something is off. His brother sells his car? And has his kid?

All you need to know after toddler vanishes when dad's car is stolen

Maria Tudrica’s father said he’s living ‘every parent’s worst nightmare’ as he revealed it was his brother who was with his Audi when it was stolen.

The man, only named as David, is currently racing back to London after hearing the “horrific” news.

He appealed for information and pleaded with the suspect to come forward - who he revealed he spoke to this morning.

It was previously reported that David had met with the suspect, but he said it was in fact his brother.

Perhaps the thief abandoned the car with Maria still in it and she has got out and wandered off? If she was in the front seat she wouldn't be strapped in so could possibly have got herself when the car was abandoned
