Human skeletal remains found near Fairfax trail

"Authorities are investigating the discovery of human skeletal remains found near a trail outside of Fairfax, the Marin County Sheriff’s Coroner Division said Tuesday.

A hiker discovered the remains Sunday off of Fairfax-Bolinas Road within the creek bed near Alpine Dam, said Roger Fielding, deputy chief coroner. The identity of the deceased is unknown.

Cause of death is pending completion of the investigation, which includes a forensic post-mortem examination scheduled for this week.

The coroner’s office is working to develop a DNA profile to be submitted into the National DNA Index System (NDIS) as part of the Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS.

Forensic anthropology experts from the California State University Chico Human Identification Lab, forensic odontologists, the California Department of Justice Missing and Unidentified Persons Section and the California Department of Justice Jan Bashinski DNA Laboratory are assisting in the investigation."

The first listing is probably the most intriguing.

James (Jim) Kravets was last seen at home in Fairfax, California on August 18, 2020. It is thought that Jim left in his vehicle, a silver Hyundai Santa Fe for an unknown destination. He enjoys rural, camping areas. Jim may be in need of medical attention and may not have identification with him. *On 10/30/20, the missing person's vehicle was located in the hills of Lagunitas, California. Despite search and rescue efforts, the missing person has not been located.

Hiker finds human remains in Fairfax creek bed

This article includes a map showing roughly where the remains were found, though the map itself leaves a lot to be desired.

Looking on google maps, there are a few creeks near the road talked about in the article, Fairfax-Bolinas Road, and a hiking trail called the Bolinas Ridge trail that extends all the way north to Olema and has a few trails branching off from it. It also connects to a few other streets besides Fairfax-Bolinas Road. The trail is about 10 miles long and according to All Trails it's heavily trafficked and a popular trail. The start of the trail is actually a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Probably one of those cases where everybody has to wait several months for the official DNA confirmation even though they're pretty sure already.
