Be nice to know from where that letter was postmarked.
And perhaps any details on what he shared inside that letter. Hmmm, he contacted mom after approximately two (2) years. We know he was still alive then, if the letter story is true. Which it sounds to be. Voluntary, then.....?

Frank would be around 60 years old today. It is hard to imagine that he would simply disappear for no reason and send only one letter home after two years.

He was about 19 years old at the time of his disappearance in July 1977. It is quite possible that the letter home was a hoax sent by someone (other than Frank) wanting to make it appear that Frank was still alive and well.

Frank’s mother received a letter from Frank sometime in 1979 stating that he was okay. That letter was the last time that anyone has ever heard from Frank.

Frank is described as an 18-year-old white/Caucasian male, 5’6” tall and 140 pounds. He has strawberry/blonde hair and blue eyes. He may be wearing prescription glasses.

Frank would be 61 years old today.

Came across this post and it struck me odd that there was a letter sent to the family. Does anyone recall American killers around this time that forced victims to wrote home?

This month marks 47 years since Airman Frank Cristensen went missing.

I tend to think that the letter home may have been a hoax. However, I have not seen it or heard that it has been authenticated as actually have been written by Airman Christensen.
