Watching the case very closely... This should prove to be an interesting trial? Streets blocked off, increased police presence, media vans camped out in the downtown district... And FIJA restricted to the free speech zone.

State's key audio expert testifies at George Zimmerman hearing
On Friday, Circuit Judge Debra Nelson listened to testimony from voice experts with expertise in speech identification testify to determine if they will be in Zimmerman's trial. Jury selection starts on Monday

Nelson did rule that Zimmerman's 6 p.m. curfew could be extended until 10 p.m. at the end of Friday's hearing, but said he is still not allowed to travel out of Seminole County except to his attorney's office. The state had objected to the motion, given prior issues with bond.

Judge denies motion to keep some Zimmerman witnesses anonymous
Zimmerman's attorney asked Judge Deborah Nelson to allow the witnesses to give their testimony out of the public's eye.
Defense attorney Mark O'Mara said the witnesses have concerns for their safety about testifying at the trial which starts next week. He says their testimony could impact the jury's decision.
The state argued that if the witnesses are seen behind a screen that it might alarm the jury.
Nelson denied the motion.

Lawyers in Trayvon Martin case play 911 call during all-day hearing

..........Up first Thursday: FBI voice recognition expert Hirotaka Nakasone, who testified that he could isolate just three seconds of screaming in the audio clip. He described the cries as “not normal, uttered by someone who was facing imminent threat of death.”

But Nakasone said he could not identify whose voice was screaming -- testimony that could help the defense if allowed during the trial. He spent most of Thursday afternoon explaining to the judge how humans examiners can interpret audio differently - and the limitations of technology..........

Several experts analyzed the 911 calls from that night, some of which captured voices believed to be either Trayvon or Zimmerman. One state audio expert, Alan Reich, has said he hears Zimmerman say “these shall be,” which he calls a “seemingly religious proclamation,” while Trayvon, scared and in a high-pitched voice, screams, “I’m begging you,” just before the shooting.

Still healing, Sanford braces for George Zimmerman’s trial

Almost immediately, the case — and for some, the verdict — began to be viewed through the prickly prism of race: Zimmerman is a white Hispanic. Trayvon was African American.

“There is going to be a precedent set, one way or the other. If the killer is exonerated, there is going to be a precedent set that certain people you can kill in America and not be held accountable. Or there is going to be a precedent set that shows how far we have come from the days of Emmett Till and Medgar Evers,” said Benjamin Crump, attorney for the Martin family, referencing two key civil rights figures, an indication of the burden that he thinks the trial carries as a reflection of America and race.

SANFORD --

Jury selection started Monday in the George Zimmerman trial. It is not exactly clear how long the whole process is expected to take. Below are answers to a few of the most common questions we've seen.

Why only six jurors?
Legal analyst Mark NeJame explains that a jury of six people is allowed because it is not capital case.
Florida Statute 913.10
Number of jurors.—Twelve persons shall constitute a jury to try all capital cases, and six persons shall constitute a jury to try all other criminal cases.
History.—s. 191, ch. 19554, 1939; CGL 1940 Supp. 8663(198); s. 87, ch. 70-339.

What is the process?
One hundred of those summoned for duty are filling out a questionnaire Judge Debra Nelson wrote. That is expected to take an hour. Once they narrow it down to 21 people, they will move into the courtroom for questions one-on-one from the attorneys. Zimmerman is present to meet the jury pool. A copy of the jury questionaire has not been provided.

Will the jury be sequestered?
During a hearing Tuesday, May 28, Judge Nelson ruled that the jury will not be sequestered, but they will only be identified by their numbers during trial. The media has agreed not to take video or photographs of the jury.

What is an anonymous jury?
According to Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, one extreme form of jury secrecy is keeping the identities of jurors totally secret. Anonymous juries are a recent, and increasingly popular, phenomenon. The policy was intended to prevent electronic access to juror identities during trial and does not prevent post-trial access to the identities, which are available in the jury management database maintained by each federal district court.

How can they protect the jury?
Legal analyst Mark NeJame says the court has taken measures to protect the jury with the items described above.

How much is the jury paid?
Payment information from Seminole County Clerk of Courts website:

Jurors who are regularly employed and receive regular wages during jury duty are not entitled to compensation for the first three days of jury service. Jurors who are not regularly employed or who do not receive regular wages during jury duty are entitled to $15.00 per day for the first three days of jury service. Jurors who serve more than three days will be paid by the state for the fourth and subsequent days of service at the rate of $30.00 per day, regardless of employment status. You will not receive compensation for mileage.

Last-minute motions

Judge Debra Nelson hears a last-minute motion for a delay of trial, the third such motion from the defense.

"We're not ready," says Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, to the judge as he asks for more time to prepare.

Judge Nelson quickly denies the motion.

SANFORD, Fla. —Jury selection began Monday in the second-degree murder case against George Zimmerman, and only a handful of potential jurors took the stand for questioning.

It has been more than a year since Trayvon Martin was shot and killed outside a complex in Sanford.

Zimmerman was able to see the first 100 members of the jury pool who were questioned about biases and how much they've seen of the trial coverage.

There are 500 prospective jurors expected this week. Their identities will not be revealed, but some of their personality traits were apparent.

SANFORD -- After a methodical first day of jury selection in the Trayvon Martin murder trial Monday, one thing became clear: Even people who profess to pay little attention to the news have heard about the killing of the unarmed Miami Gardens teenager.

One potential juror, a female night-shift worker who loves game shows and CSI: Miami, recalled the now well-known image of Trayvon Martin in a hooded sweatshirt.

Another woman, a recent Seminole County transplant from Chicago and lover of reality TV shows, said she remembers “people selling T-shirts and some kid died.”

Day 2 of Zimmerman jury selection, questioning

http://www.centurylink.net/news/rea...p-day_2_of_zimmerman_jury_selection_questi-ap

SANFORD, Florida (AP) — During two days of questioning, prosecutors and George Zimmerman's attorneys have been unable to find potential jurors who hadn't heard something about the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by the neighborhood watch volunteer.

By mid-day Tuesday, the attorneys had questioned 10 potential jurors in person, and more than 40 jury candidates had been dismissed after filling out a questionnaire.........

After reciting details about the case she had heard in the news, Juror "B-51," a white, female retiree, told the attorneys they're going to have a hard time finding jurors who haven't heard about the case and can only hope they find residents who can keep an open mind...........more.....

Trayvon Martin's family speaks

5:31 p.m.

Trayvon Martin's parents, along with attorneys Ben Crump, Natalie Jackson and Daryl Parks, address the media.

Crump said the family is impressed with the honesty of the jurors that have been questioned so far, and they are confident that the jury will do their civic duty in the trial.

Crump is now addressing a comment made on Fox News by former New York City police detective Harry Houck that Trayvon Martin would be alive today "if he didn't have a street attitude." Crump called the comment reprehensible, calling on the media to not broadcast "victim blaming."

"Trayvon Martin is not on trial here," Crump said. "He is the victim."

Tracy Martin briefly spoke, saying he is encouraged that his family can get justice, and encourages future jurors called in for questioning to continue to come forth and be honest.

Court is in recess until 9 a.m. Thursday. Ten jurors were questioned Wednesday, bringing the overall total to 24. At least two of those 24 have already been dismissed.
