SALT LAKE CITY — The FBI is asking for tips and information from the public as they search for a 14-year-old Ogden teenager who "disappeared" while visiting Mexico City.

*****
Officials said she had been visiting her maternal grandmother in Mexico City when she disappeared.

*****
Gonzalez's mother, Alma Soreque, detailed that her daughter went to a store near the family home and never returned.

*****

Steven Hymas, a special agent with the FBI in Salt Lake says Gonzalez flew to Mexico City by herself on June 15th, before disappearing on June 30th.

"There's surveillance video of her getting into a taxi," Hymas said. "We believe she was manipulated by an adult to get into that taxi and we have not seen her since."

*****
He spoke about the challenges this kind of investigation can pose.

"When we are not there doing the investigation by ourselves, also not having the authority in Mexico to conduct investigative activity, we have to rely on our partners," said Hymas.

*****
Her current location is unknown, but officials believe she is still in Mexico. Still, Hymas wants Utahns and others to be on alert if Gonzalez tries to make contact or communicate with someone.

*****
"We're working day and night," Hymas explained, "Here in Utah and with our partners in Mexico City."

"We don't have any reason to believe that she is not in the country of Mexico at this moment," said Hymas (FBI Special Agt,) dubbing the matter an "investigation of a missing girl." "That said, we do believe that there will be people here who know information. Maybe they have reached out to friends or acquaintances or other family members who might know something that can help us out."

Moreover, Hymas noted the omnipresence of electronic communication in this day and age. Even if someone is kidnapped or goes missing, he said, "If they can communicate with others, they will try."

*****
Telemundo Utah said in a report Monday that two younger cousins of Elizabeth also went missing, but neither Hymas nor Soreque (her mother) said they could speak to that aspect of the case. Telemundo identified the two other girls as Sofia Mailen Moreno Zamora, 6, and Regina Moreno Zamora, 4, and Amber Alert Mexico said the girls — Mexican citizens — had gone missing on the same day and from the same area of Mexico City as Elizabeth.
*****
Later, Soreque said, her daughter went to a neighborhood store in the Azcapotzalco section of Mexico City, where her grandma — Soreque's mother — lives, to get a soda. Soreque grew up there and described the community as having a "small town" feel, even if it's located within the expansive Mexico City metropolis.

From there, things are cloudy. "There's surveillance video of (Elizabeth) getting into a taxi. We believe she was manipulated by an adult to get into that taxi, and we have not seen her since," Hymas said.

Later, Soreque received word that her daughter never returned to her grandmother's home and almost immediately reached out to authorities. "Horrible — it is the worst thing that a mom wants to hear," she said.

New information.

*****
Elizabeth “Ely” Gonzalez, 14, may have been abducted by her uncle after she failed to return from a trip to a convenience store in Mexico City on June 30, the FBI said Friday.

The 7th grader was last seen on surveillance video climbing into a taxi with her two young cousins the same day that the 4- and 6-year-old girls’ father Antonio Moreno “abruptly traveled” to the Mexican capital from Utah.

*****
“The FBI believes Elizabeth was manipulated by an adult male, allegedly Moreno, to get into that taxi. We believe all four are traveling together,” the FBI’s Salt Lake City office said in a statement, emphasizing that Moreno did not have “permission” from any of the girls’ mothers to leave.

“Relatives have not seen or heard from them since. We believe the girls are in danger and still in Mexico.”

This KSL news video has the video of Elizabeth and her two little cousins, taken just before they got into the taxi.

This is the FBI statement:

“Elizabeth Gonzalez was last seen on June 30, 2024, walking with her two cousins, who are Mexican citizens. An Amber Alert in Mexico is currently active for all three girls. While the FBI is not the investigative authority regarding Elizabeth’s cousins, we are working with our partners to locate them as we believe they are all together,” a statement from the FBI’s Salt Lake City Field Office said.
