Clues sought in 1983 murder of Redford woman
By Beth Jachman April 9, 2015

Christina Castiglione's body was found in the Oak Grove State Game Area in Livingston County, 10 days after she was last seen in the area of Beech Day and 5 Mile roads in Redford. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

It has been 32 years since the body of a young Redford woman was discovered in the woods in Livingston County – and no arrests have ever been made.

But the Livingston County Sheriff's Department Cold Case Team remains active, and investigators say it is possible 19-year-old Christina Castiglione's murder may have been the work of a serial killer.

The mystery began on the night of March 19, 1983, when Castiglione was seen in the area of Beech Daly and 5 Mile roads.

Castiglione's boyfriend and some friends told police they were on their way to a party in a car traveling west on 5 Mile shortly after 8 p.m. when they saw her walking, according to a Redford Observer article dated March 31, 1983.

They stopped at a party store and were waiting for Castiglione to get there, but she never showed up. They went looking for her but didn't find her, according to the article...
She was last seen at about 8:30 p.m that night hitchhiking on 5 Mile Road west of Telegraph near Lola Valley, according to Redford's police chief at the time.

Ten days later, her body was found near Fisher and Fawcett roads in the Oak Grove State Game Area in Livingston County.

Castiglione had been sexually assaulted and strangled. She was a 1982 graduate of Redford Union High School.

A possible connection

Law enforcement officials have been comparing the Castiglione case to one that occurred one year earlier.

In that case, Kimberly Louiselle, who was 16 years old, was hitchhiking home from Redford when she disappeared in 1982.

Her body was found on state land at the Island Lake Recreation Area in Green Oak Township and she had also been sexually assaulted and murdered.

Louiselle was last seen alive by her boyfriend's brother, who dropped her off at the corner of 8 Mile and Merriman in Livonia on March 21, 1982.

The Livingston County Sheriff's Detective Bureau is still actively seeking information, either through the sheriff's office or anonymously through Crime Stoppers. The Livingston County Sheriff's Detective Bureau tip line is 517-546-8477.

Crime Stoppers can be reached at 1-800-CRIME-STOPPERS.

A Facebook page was initiated last year to try to raise public awareness about the homicides, called Livingston County Cold Case Team...

19-year-old Christina Castiglione, a brown-eyed brunette disappeared from Redford, Michigan Monday, March 19, 1983.

Castiglione’s body was found in Livingston County, 10 days later, on March 29. Former Livingston County Sheriff Bob Bezotte worked the investigation and indicated the unsolved case still haunts him.

Castiglione’s father had taken away her car, a Mustang, and she had just started a job at the telephone company, Bezotte recalled. She was last seen hitchhiking on 5 Mile Road near Telegraph in Redford. “We have to assume someone picked her up and that’s the tough part of the case. She ends up dead in [Livingston] County and we were never able to connect it to anyone who knew her,” he added. “We could never connect the dots.”

Castiglione’s boyfriend and other friends were cleared of involvement. Bezotte remembers 20 to 25 polygraph tests were administered to various individuals, all of whom passed and many of whom also had alibis. It is believed she was picked up by a random stranger, after which she was sexually assaulted and strangled.

Never cleared of suspicion was the man who alerted police to the location of Castiglione’s body, which was found near Fisher and Fawcett roads in the Oak Grove State Game Area. The man said he had been out in a field looking for deer when he saw the body from a distance and never came within 100 feet of the corpse. This turned out to be one of several lies he told police, Bezotte explained, adding that the man’s brother lived in the area where Castiglione was taken. The individual agreed to take a polygraph but failed to appear at the scheduled time. The man had no criminal history and because there was no evidence against him, he wasn’t charged and three years later, he was in an accident that left him a paraplegic. The last Bezotte heard, the man was living in New Jersey. The only chance of solving the case is if someone comes forward with a change of heart, Bezotte added. “Maybe they have a ‘come to Jesus’ moment and get religion.”

Castiglione’s parents have both died, never learning who was responsible for their daughter’s death, which also eats at Bezotte, who had remained in contact with the family, which also included a sister, for years. However, he is happy cold cases are being highlighted again in the newspaper and podcast. “We operate on the belief someone has knowledge,” he said. “The chances of it being solved is low as time passes, but it does happen. And that is what keeps us going.”

Has it ever been said anywhere how long Christina had been deceased once her body was found? I know she was missing for 10 days.
As in my sister Kim Louiselle, Kim was missing for 25 days before her body was found but she had only been deceased for 4 to 6 days. I'm trying to figure out if that was the same scenario with Christina or if they figured she was killed within a day or so from when she went missing?

On the Livingston County site says "Based on scene evidence, it appear that Christine's body was left at this location prior to the snowfall shortly after she was last seen in Redford"

Christine Castiglione (Livingston County Sheriff's Office)

It has been nearly 40 years since 19-year-old Christine Castiglione was found murdered on state-owned land in Livingston County.

Castiglione lived in Redford Township at the time of her disappearance. She was last seen between 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on March 19, 1983, walking westbound on 5 Mile Road near Lola Park in Redford Township.

Her body was found 10 days later, on March 29, 1983, on state-owned land near the intersection of Fisher and Faussett roads. Her body was found after a heavy snowfall and the start of the snow melting.

Her body was reported to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office. Evidence indicates her body was left at the location before the snowfall, shortly after she was last seen in Redford.

Police have interviewed numerous people and have lab work and DNA involved in the investigation.

and it's SOLVED. They made the announcement this morning.

Rest in peace Christina.

I'm glad your sister was able to be there for you today.

Her killer died in November 1983

Is there an article that identifies her killer?

''Charles David Shaw (Livingston County Sheriff's Office)

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office established its cold case unit in 2009. Since then, retired law enforcement officers have worked to solve those cases and bring closure to families.

In March 2022, investigators applied and received grant funding through Season of Justice, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding DNA testing on unsolved cold case homicides. In May of last year, the DNA evidence was sent to Othram Lab in Texas, the company behind DNA Solves.''

The article only states that he died in November 1983. What was his cause of death?

How many other victims were there?

It is good that Christina's murder has been solved after 40 years.

Patricia Alvord
''Based on information received from Shaw's family, the Sheriff's Office said, he was a sex addict with a disturbing life who struggled with mental illness and his gender identity.

"Charles Shaw had several interactions with law enforcement beginning at a young age. One such interaction resulted in his arrest in 1981 for the attempted abduction of a woman in the Fowlerville McDonald's parking lot," the release noted.''

''In 1973, Shaw was arrested by the Livonia Police Department on a breaking-and-entering charge. In 1977, he was arrested by the LPD on a drug possession charge. In 1981, he was sentenced to two weeks in jail and probation for the Fowlerville incident, according to Young. And in 1982, he was arrested for larceny of women's shoes from a Kmart.''

''Other unsolved murders

"The hope is that we end up solving some other (murders). They are not giving up. We're not done. There are other cold cases out there, but I couldn't be happier with the work that was done," Murphy said.

Among the unsolved homicides in Livingston County are:

Kimberly Louiselle, 16, was last seen near 8 Mile and Merriman roads in Livonia on March 20, 1982. Nearly three weeks later, her body was found in a thicket in the Island Lake Recreation Area in Green Oak Township by a couple hiking in the park.

Paige Renkoski, of Okemos, was last seen talking to a man standing between her car and a maroon minivan on May 24, 1990, on the shoulder of Interstate 96, a quarter-mile east of the Fowlerville exit. Although her body has never been found, police have ruled the case a homicide.''

.........

''Anthony (Nikki) Nicholas was a Detroit resident whose body was found in an abandoned farmhouse in Green Oak Township in February 2003. Nicholas, who was transgender, had supported herself as a female impersonator in several metro Detroit bars. Nicholas was last seen Feb. 15, 2003, when she was going to a party somewhere between Detroit and Ann Arbor. She died from a gunshot wound''
