Mother and five year old son reported missing from Lansing

"The human remains found in the backyard of a south Lansing home have been identified to be those of a mother and son who have been missing since June of last year, police said.

Danielle Steiner, 34, and her 5-year-old son, Aubrey Hall, had not been seen since Steiner took Aubrey out of school in early June 2018 and disappeared, according to court records.

Their bodies were discovered at a vacant house in the 800 block of Loa Street on Monday.

Their deaths are being treated as a homicide investigation. No arrests have been made, police said Friday."

LANSING, MI (WILX) - Lansing Police held a press conference on Friday morning to report on a found bones investigation.

They reported that after an autopsy and multiple tests, they were able to determine that the bones belonged to missing persons Danielle Marie Steiner, 34 of Lansing, and her 5-year-old son, Aubrey Nisan Hall. (Those are their ages when they went missing.)

On July 1, bones were found at a home in 800 block of Loa Street, near Atlas Street in south Lansing.

A construction crew that was rehabbing the home discovered the bones outside.

Federal, State, and county law enforcement agencies worked with the Lansing police to determine what the bones were.

Once it was confirmed that they were indeed human, search warrants were issued for the home and property.

On July 2 an autopsy was performed on the bones but the cause of death was not conclusive.

July 3 more tests were done and they were able to identify the bones as Steiner and Hall, who lived on the 700 block of Loa.

The two had been missing since June 2018, but not reported missing to the police until August 2018. That's when Lansing Police opened up a missing person investigation.

Bones identified as missing mother and son

Aubrey's father, Anthony Hall, was granted full custody of Aubrey after Steiner failed to attend a custody hearing in June 2018, according to court records. Steiner was given supervised parenting time.

During the custody hearings, Hall claimed Steiner was using drugs, according to court records.

Steiner and Aubrey lived in the 700 and 800 block of Loa at various times.

He said he and Aubrey watched Steiner dig up the living room and bathroom floors with a knife, talking about all the money she was finding in the floor, according to court records.

He also said Steiner was in a vehicle crash in February 2018 after she saw worms coming out of her skin and ran into another car.

Steiner has also "threatened to kill herself, and to kill her family," Hall told court officials.

When Child Protective Services interviewed Steiner after Hall reported the incidents, Steiner denied using drugs. She told investigators she had a bad reaction to marijuana the night she was digging up the floor, according to court records.

A CPS investigator said Steiner had moved to a neighbor's home just before he spoke to her because she could not afford rent, according to court records. Sometime between February and June 2018, she moved out of that house. When the investigator tried to contact her again, he could not find her.

Prior to Monday, police said the disappearance of Steiner and Aubrey was being treated as a missing persons case. There was no indication that they were in harm's way, Yankowski said, adding that in recent days police have been pursuing leads in Michigan and other states.

Police do not know how long the pair have been dead, he added.

What we know about the case of a mother, son's bodies found in Lansing

July 5, 2019

"After being missing for more than a year, the remains of a Lansing mother and her 5-year-old son were found in the backyard of a vacant, south Lansing home on July 1.

Their deaths are being treated as a homicide investigation. Lansing Police Chief Mike Yankowski has said the case is “complex” and stressed how limited the information he could share at this point in the case.

Here's what's confirmed at this point in the case:..."

Steiner and her son were reported missing last August, although the last known contact with family was weeks earlier in June when she sent a text message, said Chief Mike Yankowski, who urged the public to share any tips.

"The smallest detail can make a huge difference in the investigation," the police department said in a statement.

During a news conference, Yankowski deflected most questions about details of the investigation. He said Steiner had lived at two addresses on the street where the remains were found.

"Obviously it's very traumatic for them," Yankowski said of relatives. "It's a very tragic case, especially when you're dealing with a 5-year-old."

Remains at Lansing home identified as missing mom, young son

So she lived in the 700 block of Loa Street and the bones were found in the 800 block of Loa Street, roughly a block away?
Maybe the 800 block house was vacant when the bodies were buried or hidden...
IMO, only an idiot would bury or hide bodies of his/her victims on the premises of where he/she lived.
