(CBS DETROIT) - Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has filed charges against a 12-year-old girl in an apparent acid attack at a Detroit park.

The 12-year-old suspect has been charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm and felonious assault.

Her next court hearing is on July 18.

Deaira Summers was at the Vernor Elementary School playground with her siblings and cousin when an argument ensued between the cousin and a 12-year-old girl, according to CBS News.

The 12-year-old girl’s mother handed her a bottle of acid that she threw on the girls. Summers, who was not involved in the fight, suffered severe burns on her back, legs, and arms.

Summers hopes the girl faces consequences, “because I didn’t do nothing to that girl.”

The suspect appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on Saturday and was given a $10,000 bond. She was ordered to have no contact with Summers or any of the other witnesses.

Golston said her granddaughter suffered “second and third degree burns” and spent four days in the burn unit at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

“She is lucky to be alive but will need ongoing care to fully heal from all the wounds she incurred,” the grandmother wrote.

Dominique Summers, Deaira’s mother, told local WXYZ her daughter suffered burns on her back, legs, and arms.

“How does a child even think to bring acid to a park?” the mother asked.

Where on earth did this girl get chemical acid ????

Thankful this 11 year old didn't die or suffer facial disfigurement, but still ....
Hope the 12 year old is charged to the max.
Burns are terrible, and this 11 year old could have been blinded !
Omo.

I don't know if school is out of session in Detroit (it is here in my area) but many children go to play on the playground equipment and use the basketball hoop etc during summer months here.

I am with the parents and many of you on this. If indeed an adult brought acid to that playground to add fuel to a grade school girl dispute that adult should be charged with everything they can throw at her. (no pun intended)

A 12-year-old girl has been charged in connection to what officials say was an acid attack on another girl on a Detroit playground earlier this month.

The 12-year-old girl is scheduled to be in court Tuesday afternoon for one count each of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and felonious assault, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy said in a press releases. According to Worthy's office, the girl was released on a $10,000 bond "with a tether" on Saturday.

She was not identified by authorities and her case will be heard in the Juvenile Referee Department of the court. The 12-year-old girl's family has not identified themselves and it is unclear if they have retained an attorney...

There’s a thread for a case in Florida that just happened – – two adult sisters were fighting, and one attempted to throw muriatic acid (commonly used for swimming pool cleaning) at the other, missed, and instead hit her young niece (daughter of the sister she was fighting wit), with it, apparently injuring the child badly enough that the assailant aunt was charged with aggravated assault and various other crimes.

This is all to say, it doesn’t seem as uncommon a plan of attack as we might assume. In fact, I only recently saw an episode of the CBS fictional crime drama “FBI International“ which featured a story about a young ballerina who was attacked with acid and permanently disfigured by someone who wanted to permanently ruin her chances of being a star.
