Teen ‘willed herself back’ from Kalamazoo shooting

Associated Press 7:30 a.m. EST March 4, 2016

Kalamazoo, Mich. — The mother of a 14-year-old girl who survived a series of random shootings in southwestern Michigan that left six dead believes her daughter “willed herself back” after doctors called a time of death.

Abigail was shot in the head when four family friends were fatally shot Feb. 20 in the Cracker Barrel parking lot near Kalamazoo.Vicki Kopf said she was already discussing the process of donating the organs of her daughter, Abigail, but she heard a faint heartbeat. Several hours later, Kopf said, she felt the teen squeeze her hand...

In an otherwise tragic case, I'm so happy that Abigail is recovering from her injuries. I hope she continues to improve :praying:

Jason Dalton, Uber Driver Charged in Kalamazoo Massacre, Says He Was 'Taken Over' by App

by Tim Stelloh

Here's a modern twist on an old defense: The app made him do it.

The Uber driver charged with killing six people and wounding two in Kalamazoo, Michigan, last month told detectives that the car service's mobile phone application turned him into "a puppet" and that he wasn't sure "how much he had or had not done."

According to police documents released Monday, Jason Dalton, 45, told detectives during an often muddled Feb. 22 interview that he is "not a killer and he knows that he has killed. Dalton said that he could only tell us that [the app] has the ability to take you over." ...

I thought from the get-go that this tragic case would end up with a psych defense

This article states he had a bad temper, I believe this guy had rage/anger issues and lost it over some personal or financial or job related problem.
Has it been said what the phone call was about before the shootings?Or whom the call was from?

I haven't read anything about the phone call. This is probably a significant detail in the investigation, and LE is keeping the information close to the vest. :moo:

Yep, I haven't followed this case closely but I'm not buying the insanity defense. We had an Uber driver around here who became obsessed with a young lady he drove home and started stalking her with creepy notes. When I heard that this guy ended up near some college hang-out (sorry, no source), I figured he probably got rejected by some young hottie at some point in the not too distant past, and decided to take it out on some poor random folks who had nothing to do with it, as per usual in these incidents.

Kalamazoo Shooting: Lawsuit Against Uber Allegedly Filed by Suspect Is Hoax

by Erik Ortiz

A handwritten federal lawsuit reportedly filed by the suspect in last month's deadly shooting rampage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was a hoax, officials said Thursday.

The suit was mailed Tuesday to the U.S. District Court in Detroit, The Associated Press reported, and claimed alleged shooter Jason Brian Dalton was suing Uber for $10 million after failing to get back wages and overtime as a driver for the ride-hailing app.

But the complaint is a sham, Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Pali Matyas told NBC affiliate WOOD-TV in an email that was also confirmed to NBC News...

Authorities: Uber lawsuit not from Kalamazoo suspect Includes document

Jennifer Chambers, The Detroit News 11:47 a.m. EDT March 17, 2016

Authorities in Kalamazoo say an Uber driver charged with killing six people in Kalamazoo did not file a lawsuit against the online transportation company for $10 million.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said Thursday suspect Jason Brian Dalton denied filing the lawsuit in U.S District Court during an interview inside the county jail early Thursday morning.

Before speaking to Dalton, Matyas compared Dalton’s handwritten statement against the handwriting in the lawsuit and the two did not match, he said...

Impact, implications of hoax federal lawsuits

Michael Tarm, Associated Press 9:14 a.m. EDT March 26, 2016

Chicago — Legal experts say bogus lawsuits like two recently filed under the names of suspects in high-profile criminal cases are rare, but that prosecutors have options for pursuing charges.

Federal investigators are looking into two hoax lawsuits that were mailed from Pennsylvania in the last month. One lists the plaintiff as the former Uber driver suspected in several fatal shootings last month in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and the other was filed in the name of the man convicted in the fatal 2011 shooting rampage in Arizona that injured then-U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords.

Here are details about prosecutors’ options and the ongoing investigations...
