‘We will not rest’ : Search continues for elderly mid-Missouri woman

Police continue to search for answers one year since the disappearance of an 88-year-old, mid-Missouri woman.

Betty L. Hayes, 88, was last in contact with a family member via phone on Dec. 16, 2021. She was reported missing from her home on Route C the next day.

Several law enforcement agencies have teamed up for a large-scale search and intensive investigation into her disappearance. Police have followed up on multiple leads, but have yet to determine the whereabouts of Hayes one year later.

Haye's family says the day Betty disappeared is one they still remember but one detail was concerning for Betty's son, Mike Hayes.

"I received a phone call that she couldn’t be found I would say I was panicked," Mozingo said last year.

"When I pulled the storm door back completely, I noticed that the inside door of the house was completely kicked in and the door jam was broken on the house," said Mike Hayes, Betty's son.

Although authorities did not find a connection to Hayes's disappearance, according to court documents, John Conde and Joshua Mcnabb were arrested in March for burglarizing betty Hayes's home in 2021 between May 1. and June 30.

Conde reportedly told investigators McNabb would take Hayes out to dinner so Conde would have time to steal from her home.

Conde and McNabb were charged with first-degree burglary, six counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, and felony stealing

The Monroe County Sheriff's office still needs the community's help in finding Betty Hayes.

Betty Hayes is described to be 5'2, weighs 86 pounds, has grey hair and blue eyes, and was last seen wearing a dark coat and dark stocking hat.

The family has now decided to also raise the reward from $10,000 to $30,000 for anyone that knows where Betty L. Hayes is at. For now, the search will continue for the Hayes family and Mike asks if anyone knows where his mother he'd like to share this message.
"If anybody has any information on where mom is or information about a suspect that's put mom in this position where she is we would greatly appreciate them coming forward with that information... we would greatly appreciate it."

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office asks that if anyone has any information about Betty Hayes to contact the Monroe Sheriff’s Office at 660-327-4060 or the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 1-800-525-5555.

Details of Disappearance

Hayes was last seen grocery shopping at 4:15 p.m. on December 16, 2021, in Paris, Missouri. She spoke to her daughter on the phone at 9:30 p.m. She is believed to have been at her home in the 17000 block of Route C in Holliday, Missouri at the time. She has never been heard from again. All her of vehicles and her purse were left behind.

When Hayes's son went to her home on December 17, he noticed the door to the house appeared to have been kicked in and the doorjam was broken. Her loved ones believe she did not wander away but could have been abducted.

When investigating her disappearance, police learned two men allegedly broke into and burglarized her home multiple times between May and June 2021, in an effort to steal six weapons and a pull trailer.

John Conde and Joshua McNabb were each charged with one count of felony burglary, seven counts of felony stealing, six counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, financial exploitation of an elderly person and conspiracy to commit felony financial exploitation of the elderly. Authorities stated there was no evidence to tie either man to her disappearance, however.

Hayes worked as a nurse for over 35 years and also had a herd of cattle. Her family describes her as a loving and hardworking person. The circumstances of her disappearance are unclear. Her case remains unsolved.

After two inconsequential hearings last week, Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Nicole Volkert estimates the two men facing a combined 25-plus felonies in the Betty Hayes burglary cases may not see trials for another year or more.

Hearings for John Conde, in Paris, and Joshua McNabb, in Warrenton, the two men charged with systemically burglarizing and stealing from Hayes’ home and property for two months in 2021, were held electronically Thursday, with no movement in either.

New hearings, which the prosecutor imagines will also be insignificant, are scheduled for March.

Volkert said neither man appeared physically last Thursday. Conde is being held in Macon County on a $100,000 bond while McNabb is in Randolph County and denied bail.

Authorities allege that between May 1 and June 30, 2021, Conde and McNabb conspired to steal six weapons, jewelry, an arrowhead collection and a pull trailer from Hayes’ property on Route C, south of Holliday.

In an October 2021 probable cause statement, Conde alleged McNabb became, “obsessed with the thought of owning some of Hayes’ land... (and) when McNabb realized he was not going to be able to buy any of Hayes’ property, he (McNabb) decided to start stealing”. Conde told the Missouri State Highway Patrol McNabb would lure Hayes from her rural home and he would steal the items.

I came here hoping to learn they had found something that may lead to her coming home . I'm from Missouri and have followed her case. It's heart breaking . She was a little old lady ,what kind of monsters are these men. If they are indeed involved that is. I'm curious as to if the family believes it was the two men in custody. Maybe trial delay is on purpose for one reason or another.

Wow. I'm really curious who this witness is. MOO

From the article:

The suspect had heard about a search for Hayes' remains in Paris, Missouri, and announced to the witness that the body would not be found there. Instead, he declared the remains would be found instead on a plot of land he owned.

Law enforcement officials confirmed ownership of the property, conducted a search and found remains consistent with those of the victim.
