A Franklin County judge today said that jurors would be chosen from another county, then brought to Union to hear the case against Michael Devlin in the kidnapping of Ben Ownby.
Judge Stanley Williams did not specify where the jurors would be found. A lawyer for Devlin, Michael Kielty, suggested that they come from one of the metropolitan areas in Missouri, either St. Louis, St. Louis County or Jackson County, which includes Kansas City.

No trial date was set. Williams gave the defense until Aug. 31 to file motions, then set another hearing for Oct. 18.
"We set the template for a level playing field," Kielty said after the hearing.
Prosecuting Attorney Robert Parks said the trial should be speedy once motions are heard and a jury is selected.
"Out here we try 'em fast, so I can't see this trial lasting more than three or four days," he said.

Devlin was not in the courtroom for today's hearing. Kielty said he would go to the Franklin County Detention Center to inform his client of the judge's ruling.
Kielty said today's ruling is only a small part of Devlin's complex legal battle. "You've got to win one victory at a time," Kielty said. "We (will) just put our nose to the grindstone, get to work and prepare for trial."
Kielty said he and Corlija have received more than 4,000 pages of evidence the state has amassed against Devlin. He said Devlin is reviewing the evidence and making copious notes to rebut much of it. Corlija said Devlin is eager to participate in his own defense.

Devlin's next court hearing will be July 16 in Washington County. Corlija and Kielty also have filed a motion there for a change of venue.
