I think he may have been identified as Steven Robert Asplund. His NamUs page has also been removed in the past couple of days.

Steven went missing on January 9, 1994 from Moline, IL, 2 months before the UID was found approx. 250 miles away. The UID was estimated to have died 1 month prior.
His height fits, the weight is a bit off (180 lb vs 197 lbs), he has blond hair vs brown hair for the UID.
Both Steven and the UID were wearing sweatpants (gray for Steven vs white for the UID) and sports/tennis shoes.
Steven was 32 when he went missing and the UID was estimated to be 40-99 per NamUs and 34-39 per Doe Network.

It is not a perfect match but the things that differ aren't a deal breaker IMO.

Asplund's insurance card was located on a footbridge at Loud Thunder Forest Preserve in Rock Island County, which borders the Mississippi River. Bettendorf, where his car was found west of I-74 near the Mississippi, is very close to the preserve and across the river from Moline, where he was last seen.

It seems there were persons of interest a few years back in Steve's case--maybe waiting to announce since an active investigation? I don't know if they were ever able to determine or release a cause of death in the case of the unidentified man.

Steve Asplund

He drove away …. and vanished

He left a friend’s Moline residence near 4th Street and 20th Avenue in his Ford Mustang and vanished.

He had gone to his friend’s house to borrow a caulking gun. At 7:30 p.m. he left for home, which was close by.

He never made it home. When he hadn’t shown up by 6 a.m. the next day, his fiancée reported him missing to Moline Police.

His 1987 Ford Mustang was found abandoned in a parking lot at the 13th Street landing at the base of the Interstate 74 Bridge in Bettendorf. Evidence gathered from the car was inconclusive…

Asplund disappeared from Moline, Illinois on January 9, 1994. A few days later, Asplund's red or black 1987 Ford Mustang was discovered abandoned in a parking lot at the base of the Interstate 74 Bridge in Bettendorf, Iowa. There was no sign of him at the scene.

His body was found in the Mississippi River in St. Louis County, Missouri in April 1994, but it wasn't identified at the time. The remains were identified 28 years later, in September 2022. Investigators stated there was no indication of foul play in Asplund's death and they believe he drowned after either accidentally or intentionally going into the water.

Rest peacefully now Steven.
