Here is a very complex one. His sister is the champion of his case.

A friend to all that knew him, Kirby lived life fast, worked hard, loved people, and always looked sharp while doing it. He enjoyed fast cars, motorcycles, road trips, trying new foods, especially anything spicy, and fishing. Kicking back with friends and family while listening to good music or riding any backroad were favorite pastimes. Out of all his accomplishments, his children were his greatest pride and joy. He was a wonderful father and although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing we will meet Kirby again someday.

According to the Smyth County Sheriff's Office, Jeffery Spence and Karen Spence had active capital murder warrants from Mississippi for the 2022 murder of Kirby Carpenter.

Sheriff Chip Shuler said the two had only been in the area for a few months and most recently were living in the Sugar Grove area.

According to NBC affiliate WTVA, the couple's daughter, Caitlin Spence, was arrested Thursday in Pennsylvania.

Investigators said she was living with the victim at the time. The victim was a well-known business owner in the rural Mississippi county just across the Tennessee line.

According to investigators, the trio had long been considered suspects and a new piece of evidence brought a break in the case and led to the arrests.

Jeff Spence's past is pretty wild.
This buck he stole was millions of dollars.

Karen Spence was a school nurse.

Caitlin just had Kirby's baby shortly before he got murdered.

“My knees hit the floor. I was hollering,” Mattie Jones, Carpenter’s mother, told Law&Crime Network. “In our hearts and in ourselves, we know who had done it. But now the world knows.”

In an interview, Jones said she believed Spence was after her son’s bank account."

so is there any speculation as to why?
If you follow his sisters quest for Justice, "Justice for Kirby" you will find that the #1 reason was Money. Kirby owned rental properties, had just sold a pawn shop, or two (can't verify 2), was an avid coin collector and dealer of precious metals. Had many safes in his home (The safes codes were changed by the GF and her parents). They took off with as much as they could load into their vehicles and the baby to PA. The home that the childs child support checks were going to was burned to the ground. A new home was purchased, paid for in full with CASH. Bank deposits galore after going to the coin shops in PA. Paper trails a mile long! Gavin Fish on YouTube has the receipts!
