SYLVA, N.C. (AP) A mother whose 8-year-old son died of heat exposure in her car while she worked a double shift at nursing home was acquitted Monday of all charges related to his death.
A jury deliberated about four hours before returning the not guilty verdicts on the one-year anniversary of Devin Gibson's death. Michelle Gibson had been charged with second-degree murder and felony child abuse.
"My heart, my soul and my mind is grateful," Gibson said. "I want to go on and rest and let my son rest."
Prosecutors said Gibson occasionally kept Devin in the trunk of her 2001 Ford Escort.
Gibson denied locking Devin in the car trunk, but said she was responsible for his death. The nursing assistant told investigators she had no one to care for her son while she worked a 16-hour shift.
Assistant District Attorney Roy Wijewickrama said Gibson used her words -- not a lock or restraints -- to make Devin stay in the car.
"She told him to stay in the vehicle and use the diapers if he needed to go to the bathroom," Wijewickrama said. "And he did. He died listening to his mom."
The murder charge carried a sentence of up to 16 years.
WHAT IN GOD'S NAME WAS THIS JURY THINKING????? Can you think of anything more horrible than to be locked in a hot trunk for 16 hours a day with no bathroom, just locked in there? She's going free after this????

Isn't that verbal abuse?? What did she say that made him WANT to stay in that trunk? Jeana, is she getting any kind of a conviction at all??

Now she is 13 and she turned to me and said "Mom did they just say that she locked her son in the trunk of a hot car for 16 hours, he died and she is found not guilty?" Now, if my 13 year old can see the absurdity of this, you would think a jury would. How can she be not guilty? I sure hope they allow her to have custody of any other children. What in the world has happened to parents today? So many of them are so twisted!

I don't have time to go in to it now, but I was relieved that this woman was not convicted and being sent to prison. It's a horribly sad story..........I will try and add more later when I get home. Please don't judge a book by it's cover..................
