I have no idea if LE does this, but many times throughout this case I've thought it would be smart for LE to slip a cadaver dog in with search dogs in cases like this from the beginning so that everyone assumes they are simply tracking a missing kid. That way, they might be able to know early on if there is reason to suspect the child may be dead without the perps even realizing.

I would think they would still have to search for a child as if they were alive if this was the only evidence they turned up initially because dogs can be wrong. But it could still give LE a headstart in the case, I would think.

Smart idea!!

Cases are not necessarily followed by popular ranking, that’s what thread tools are for. I am following three cases, and each are continually slogged down by lengthy personal anecdotes.

O/T, Warning: Personal Anecdote here ~

You remind me a lot of my sister.

Whenever I'm in the middle of telling her anything, her response is, "Get to the point. Stop adding in stuff I don't need to know. Just tell me what happened. I don't need all the window dressing."

Of course, my thought is always that I need to fill in the background so she gets the big picture.

She does not agree, to say the least.

We love each other dearly, but we sure can drive the other up the wall with our different communication styles.

Please don't think I'm ragging on you here. You have a valid viewpoint many agree with. I know my sister would heartily endorse it.

We're all different. I believe there's room for all of us here, for the very reason of your own quick-witted 'Scrollin n Rollin under your user name.

( That is so clever! Made me smile! )

Please feel free to keep scrolling and rolling, but don't leave or give up on us more rambling types. We want and need your viewpoint too....

Monday, around 6:30 a.m. - Kristy Woods calls the Onslow County Sheriff's Office to report her 3-year-old daughter, Mariah Kay Woods, is missing. The mom says she last saw her around 11 p.m. Sunday.

Monday, 11:15 a.m. - An Amber Alert was released for Woods, describing her as 2-foot-9 and 30 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.

Monday, 1:16 p.m. - Woods' address is verified on Dawson Cabin Road in Jacksonville

None of this makes sense to me. KW calls 911 around 6:30 and it takes them until 11:15 am to issue an Amber Alert and until 1:15 pm to verify her address. What did they do in the almost 5 hours after KW called 911 and they issued the Amber Alert? They obviously didn't call AW. That would have been one of the FIRST phone calls I would have made if I was KW -yet he didn't even learn about it until after the Amber Alert had been issued.

BBM - is "calling the Onslow County Sheriff's Office" the same as "calling 911"?

I'm from another part of the world. :)

If KW is charged with child neglect (which I would think she will be, at the least), how long of a sentence would she be facing in NC?

Any idea?

I think there are levels of neglect, and more than one type of neglect charge, so I don't think we can guess that without charges.

I thought that was odd. Gee, let me find the phone book, or call information, or look online for the number since my child has been snatched in the night. Unless she had the sheriff's office number memorized, it seems like it would be natural to call 911...that's an emergency if I've ever heard of one!

That's ok, I wasn't looking for any guesses. I wondered if anyone had looked it up, and if there's a "range" that is typical for cases resulting in a child's death.

My nephew has a sticker on the phone with Sheriff & Fire Dept numbers. BUT he said in an emergency he would dial 911.

What I'm saying is that without specific charges being filed, any answer at this point would be a guess.

Every article I have seen states she called 911 - does anyone know where the information that she called sheriffs office instead of 911 came from?

[FONT=&quot]"It was too late to save Mariah the moment the 911 call came in," FBI agent Stanley Meador said of the call the girl's mother made Monday to report her missing.

In addition news media requested 911 call be released

On Thursday, the newspaper made a request to the Onslow County Emergency Operations Center for audio files of the 911 call made by Mariah Woods’ family on Nov. 27, the day the child was reported missing. That request was denied through Onslow County spokesman Chad Ray, citing orders from the authorities conducting the ongoing investigation and the Fourth Prosecutorial District Attorney’s Office.

Bingo. That tells you what KW knew about her daughter and what LE strongly suspected from the get-go.

I agree 100 percent! IF Mariah had been kidnapped in four hours they would have been LONG gone. And in those four hours they never thought to contact AW speaks volumes to me.

The information about KM calling the sheriff’s office was reported in several media articles. Perhaps the 911 operators are part of the sheriff’s department?

It was one of the very first details I remember. So maybe from first day or two or....... NGs first interview with dad was 11/29.

She may have had the number memorized and going on automatic pilot called that number instead of 911. We didn't have 911 service in my county for YEARS, even after most of the country had it we still were struggling with getting the system in place, so for years if you needed help you called the local police dept or fire dept direct line.

O/T Truthfully, I wish they kept it that way. I don't know if this normal for 911 service over-all but here in my county you'll get faster response if you just call the police or fire dept directly. If you call 911 you have to play 20 questions with the operator, which takes a few minutes, then they transfer you to your local police or fire dept where you have to repeat all of your information to their dispatcher and THEN they will dispatch someone to you and then you'll be lucky if they show up in a reasonable time. Last time I called 911 it was because I came upon someone hit by a car (he was ultimately fine), it took the ambulance 15 min to show up and just for the record, the fire house (where the ambulance service is housed) was literally 3 min down the road from where we were. It was insane.

Hmmm....If Onslow Co Sheriff's Dept was called and not 911, was there a recording of the phone call?

If felony child abuse charges (a class D felony) were to be filed which would include allowing another to abuses a child under the age of 16 with serious bodily injury or death since she has no prior convictions the structured sentencing range from mitigating to aggravated would be 38 - 80 months and an allowance for time served in pre-trial confinement. 3 years 2 months to 6 years 8 months. Misdemeanor child abuse would be 30 days suspended for a first time offender.

Ahh, it's nice to have someone else speak the NC Statutes and the Structured Sentencing doc! Thanks Grouchymom!

I certainly think they will charge her with the most serious neglect charge possible. Even before Mariah's death, IMO it still would be a charge for the most egregious neglect. She had to know bad things were happening, even if she were not a part of it. Oh, that sweet little face.

I am so sick & tired of "boyfriends." How could someone ever do what so many have done -- put a ~man~ ahead of her flesh & blood. We see reasons for keeping the bf -- maybe he earns a salary that helps a lot, or security, etc., but it it shouldn't be viewed as any kind of trade-off. Grrrrr.

Hmmm....If Onslow Co Sheriff's Dept was called and not 911, was there a recording of the phone call?

The newspaper requested the 911 call records and was denied. It's possible that KW called 911 and was put on the line with the Sherrffs office at some point. Not sure what the steps are for 911 operators handling a missing child report in that location. It can be different if your home is considered in the "city" vs "the county".
