Judge is voidiring again the jurors as this morning it was reported that the jurors were discussing the case in some way. That's all I know at this point.

Live feed is on wral now. CLosing statements are on wftv with LDB in Judge Belvin Perry's court.

One of the alternate jurors told the judge that a gentleman on the jury had mentioned that the city of Durham's reputation was on the line.

I did a short transcript of the judge speaking to the alternate juror as she explained her issue to him:

At about the 4:05 minute mark:
Well, yesterday when I went in—I was the last juror picked—uhm, we were sitting down; and this one gentleman kind of took charge and said, you know, “here is what we should do”. And, uhm—you know—as a team; and, uhm; just looking; he rambled a bit; but, ah, what I got out of it was that we should, umh, be concerned about Durham’s image. You know, we are representing Durham; and, uhm, there was reference to another trial. It wasn’t specifically said what it was, but another juror didn’t know what it was and then somebody else said, “Well, we took a survey.” You know, you know. And I don’t know if it’s this—uhm--if felt a little bit uncomfortable about it. He just mentioned something about politics and how we are representing Durham; and—you know—what is going to happen afterwards; and I got out of it, we need to really do a good job for Durham. For Durham’s image.

This article explains the alternate juror's issue much better than I did. It also mentions her former boyfriend's testimony that occurred on Friday.

The judge ruled that he could testify as long as he didn't mention that her kids were present or anything about the arson.

DURHAM -- An alleged comment by a juror in the Crystal Mangum murder trial prompted the judge to address jurors individually Friday.

For a refresher, this link contains a time line to the Duke lacrosse case. (There is still another case she was involved in that involved the former boyfriend who testified Friday.)

Here are a few screenshots from some of the crime scene photos they showed in trial this morning.

And this is a close up of a piece of a broken knife--there were other pieces shown of broken knives in various rooms in the apartment.

Hey there, Hi there, Ho there, CUCKOOHEAD!! :seeya:Good to "see" ya! Have you met with sanity yet, or are yooo still out there somewhere?!lol

The usual hours of Wake County Superior Court are M--F, 9:30 am, to 5:00pm, EST (or EDT if it applies, and it doesn't at this time). Lunch is usually from 1:00pm--2:30pm, and there is a morning and an afternoon 15-min break.

I've never seen so many knives in a trial as I am seeing now. Did she attack him with a set of steak knives? Did he use any to fight back? I guess I have to be patient and just listen...

A big thank-you, Truth Prevails, for giving us those good screen shots! :drumroll:

I know--I'm never going to feel the same when I'm preparing vegetables again.

Here is another one that I caught with the detective holding several knives that were found out on the kitchen counter.

It sounds to me like she had some sort of psychotic episode. She had a similar one with an ex, but he ran outside half dressed until the police arrived.

I'm in and out today, and am really mostly listening; but I think she stabbed him once in the rib area and then a few times on one shoulder, although those wounds were not so deep.

We should hear more about that, though.

I was searching for some background on her previous charges involving her ex-boyfriend, Walker.

I came across this blog entry in Color Lines and the whole write-up is interesting. I have quoted just the paragraph succinctly describing the events in February, 2010, but I highly recommend reading the whole thing.

Maybe with a few grains of salt, though. :)

Crystal Gail Mangum Isn’t Innocent, But She’s a Victim Just the Same
By Akiba Solomon | Wednesday, April 20 2011, 1:17 PM EST

•In February 2010, a little over a year before Daye’s stabbing, Mangum was arrested for assaulting another boyfriend, Milton Walker, and setting his clothes on fire in her bathtub. By then she was a mother of a 3-, 9- and 10-year-old. Her kids were in the next room. Mangum’s daughter, called police because she believed her mom was going to die. But when cops arrived, they reportedly heard her threaten to stab Walker. Mangum—who denied she’d set the fire and insisted that Walker had beaten her—was charged with a slew of felonies including attempted first-degree murder and arson. The jury deadlocked on the felonies; Magnum was sentenced to time served for misdemeanor child abuse, resisting arrest and injury to personal property.

I hope you all don't think I'm spamming the thread with links--I'll mention this last thing and then I'll stop. :blushing:

The medical examiner on this case--Dr. Clay Nichols--is being investigated for "mishandling evidence in another 2011 autopsy."

Judge Ridgeway has ruled that those alleged charges will not affect his testimony in this case--but he is continuing to keep abreast of those matters.

I think Dr. Nichols may testify this afternoon. (I'm not totally sure I caught that correctly.)

Defense attorney Daniel Meier asked that the trial be delayed until a state investigation into former deputy chief medical examiner Dr. Clay Nichols is completed, but Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway denied the motion.
...
“The subject matter of that investigation does not relate in anyway to this case,” Ridgeway said. “I’ve requested both the SBI agent and the (Orange County) district attorney provide me with any updates that their opinion in that changes.”

Opening statements for this trial were on Thursday of last week. So, today is only the third day of testimony.

Defense hasn't even begun their side yet. :)

the apartment had no furniture to speak of, a folding chair, a kerosene heater and lots of debris.

CM struggled until the cops cuffed her, then she went completely limp and unresponsive.
