An attempted robbery at a highway rest area in eastern Nebraska left a 72-year-old man dead and his 71-year-old wife critically injured in a knife attack Wednesday, authorities said.

Authorities said Gary and Mary Weaver had been traveling across Nebraska in their mobile home before the attack occurred.

James Thompson Jr., 22, of Elyria, Ohio, was being held Wednesday in the Hall County Jail. He faces numerous charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, robbery and fleeing from police. Because he hasn't appeared in court yet he doesn't have a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Witnesses say they heard an Ohio man demand the keys to a Jeep that was being towed behind a Missouri couple's RV before he brutally stabbed them both and killed the man at an Interstate 80 rest area.

James Thompson Jr., 22, was formally charged with first-degree murder and 10 other felonies Thursday morning — a day after the attack at a rest area just outside Grand Island in eastern Nebraska. Thompson — who is from Elyria — is represented by the Hall County public defender, who declined to comment on the case.

Part of the attack was captured on a trucker's dash cam, but some of it happened out of sight inside Gary and Mary Weaver's RV around 7 a.m. Wednesday, according to the affidavit Hall County Sheriff’s Sgt. Joshua Moline filed in court.

He killed them for their jeep? Poor couple, minding their own business.

The attacker's eyes look completely blank.
Such a devastating crime. I can't imagine the terror the victims felt.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A Missouri family that experienced the unthinkable now expresses their gratitude after the vicious attack at a Nebraska rest area.

Mary's now home, her physical recovery progressing daily.

“The emotional recovery we're focusing on, that will be the biggest challenge,” Eudy said.

More than anything, Victoria says folks can honor her dad by making music, making someone laugh, and just showing kindness.

Straight up sounds like a repeat of the Blind River Reststop murders of 1991 that was on Unsolved Mysteries.

Glad police managed to catch this particular killer though. A dash cam recorded it?

I'm thinking drugs.
22 years old .
@Snoopster
72 and 71.
I have a hard time picturing a person being born 40+ YEARS after them ,never having met them murdering them . I cant pretend to be able to conjure up the victims feelings about it.
Back to the realness of the sitch= WHY?
Jeeps are one of the top ten cars purchased in the U.S
He could of probably found one with keys ,left in it, at every Walmart between Ohio and NE.
