Description
Clothing: Long sleeve green/orange plaid shirt.

Circumstances of Recovery: Monday, October 18, 2021, a local rancher found what appeared to be human bones at a site just north of the North Platte River, North-West of Melbeta. The bones were photographed and recovered. The area was searched and no other bones were recovered. The next day the bones were examined by the Regional West Medical Center Pathology staff and photos were sent to a Forensic Anthropologist in Ft. Collins, CO. The bones were positively identified as human, two bones from the left forearm, noted as the "ulna" and "radial" bones. On October 25, 2021 K-9 cadaver teams from Colorado arrived and spent several hours searching the area. Dogs did not indicate on any areas of interest.

Family members of Walter Eugene Patterson-Black reported him missing on May 15, 2016. He was last seen days before at a local convenience store and officers found his vehicle on May 17 at the YMCA parking lot.

Police developed information that Patterson-Black may have gone into the North Platte River on foot and he has been believed dead. Firefighters spent days searching the river, attempting to recover his body. Police searched the area and the Nebraska State Patrol’s Air Wing and cadaver dogs were also used in the searches.

Over the years, local agencies have searched along the river. In October 2021, a hunter setting up a goose blind on property between Melbeta and Minatare reported to authorities that he had found a human bone. A piece of cloth, believed to be a shirt, was located about 100 feet from the bone

DNA recovered from an arm bone in 2021 near the North Platte River has been matched, resulting in solving the case of a 72-year-old man missing since 2016.
