In 2002, the Nebraska State Patrol established a Cold Case Unit, consisting of a Supervising Sergeant, Investigators and a Cold Case Crime Analyst.
The purpose of the Cold Case Unit is to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, by seeking answers and justice for the victims and their families.
The Cold Case Unit is a centralized resource to provide assistance in the investigation and adjudication of cold cases to law enforcement agencies around the state.
Currently, there are approximately 250 unsolved homicides statewide and the Nebraska State Patrol has at least 95 open sexual assault related cases.
Since the inception of the Cold Case unit, technological advancements to include DNA testing have successfully resulted in the resolution of a number of cases.
