The economic devastation is enormous in Las Vegas. I am not sure when it will recover, or if it will ever be the same again.

Yes. Casino's can't make gaming fun if they have to isolate people. Hard-core gamers will just migrate to on-line gaming.
The big Vegas resort casinos will have to work really hard to bring back the large partying groups: the pool parties, the weekenders from California, the Vegas wedding parties, etc.

In a way, the casino industry will be hit hard with real expensive capital overhead in their fixed operating costs like the cruise industry and will have to discount heavily to get any business back.

I don't see the buffets being a big draw any time soon. And as for the shows, everyone is packed into seating, right next to each other.

I had to do a quick flight the other day, the middle seat was left open, of course, the flight was changed to a puddle jumper.

I'm watching/interested in northern Nevada. The other day I saw a news blurb that a homeless person in Reno had tested positive. I had a very similar thought as you did here, that the count is about to increase dramatically in Reno...

I don't know why the governor won't issue a "Stay at Home" order for Nevada. Probably due to stopping the work in Elko.

Mining?

Elko County has cases...

I think I've seen mining listed as essential -- they could exempt it that way but still get the denser urban areas to stay home...

As I posted on the Oregon thread a bit ago, Reno is one of the places people in my area go for big-city services. It's our main airport (hopefully no one's flying atm). I'm hoping it doesn't become a vector.

@Auntie Cipation I am sure that Reno is already compromised, due to being so close to Tahoe, California border. It is just such an insidious virus, people appear perfectly normal and healthy, a fever, coughing and BAM, ventilator. Or so many have the virus, and are completely asymptomatic, like Senator Rand Paul.

Gov. Sisolak issues travel advisory for Nevada

Gov. Steve Sisolak issued a travel advisory for Nevada on Tuesday in the continued effort to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The advisory urges travelers or returning Nevadans to self-quarantine and monitor their health for 14 days after arriving or returning to the state.

Sisolak also urged against nonessential travel, especially in places where CDC advisories have been issued. He said Nevadans who live on state borders should practive "aggressive" social distancing if they have to cross the border for essential daily matters.

The advisory does not apply to healthcare, public health, public safety, transportation, and food supply essential employees, the statement said.

As of Tuesday, there were 1,113 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nevada.

Finally, governor issues "Stay at Home" order.

In the same issue, is an article on the unemployment insurance benefits in Nevada. They are the ones with the problems! People still have to certify that they made 2 job contacts a week! If they don't, they won't get paid for that week, it creates an "issue" on the weekly filing.

Get it together Neveda Unemployment!

Nevada's got to do a better job informing its citizens. Brother who lives there did not know about the shelter in place and asked what it meant.

"Today’s ‘Stay at Home’ directive strengthens the imperative that Nevadans must not leave their homes for nonessential activities in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” Sisolak said in a statement. “This directive builds on previous directives around school closures, social distancing, closure of non-essential businesses, and bans on public gatherings of 10 or more people by requiring you stay home unless leaving is absolutely necessary.”

Just a side note, the closing of the casinos has really impacted people who are on Social Security benefits. Many of them worked part time jobs, as security, ushers for shows. That income made a huge difference in quality of life for those folks.

Sure, there is unemployment insurance, and the stimulus package. But not the same as a consistent pay check.
