Christchurch trial: New Zealand media agree to curb white supremacy coverage
Reporting guidelines devised and signed by five major news organisations

1 May 2019

"In the lead-up to the accused shooter’s next court appearance on 14 June, New Zealand’s five largest media organisations have signed a voluntary agreement committing to adhere to a strict set of protocols designed to limit the exposure of the accused killer’s ideals and beliefs. …

It is understood the agreement is the first of its kind to be signed in New Zealand and represents a bold step forward for media co-operation during a time of unprecedented upheaval and intense competition for dwindling audience numbers."

New pictures show the progress of a controversial mural of Jacinda Ardern on a Melbourne silo.

The mural has been shrouded in controversy after it was revealed that street artist Loretto Lizzio would paint on the silo the iconic image of the New Zealand PM hugging a Muslim woman after the Christchurch mosque attack.

But the mural was approved by the local council, and a new photo shows the artwork very close to completion.

"The man accused of killing 51 worshipers at two Christchurch mosques has been charged by New Zealand police with engaging in a "terrorist act," the first time such a charge has been laid inside the country.

Australian citizen Brenton Tarrant, 28, faces an additional 51 charges of murder and 40 of attempted murder for the March attack which was New Zealand's worst mass shooting in modern history, New Zealand police said in a statement Tuesday."

Long recovery ahead for two Christchurch mosque attack survivors still in hospital

Long recovery ahead for two Christchurch mosque attack survivors still in hospital

May 24, 2019

"A woman who will never walk again after being shot in the mosque terror attacks could remain in hospital for many more months, her husband says.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is one of two terror victims who still remain in hospital more than two months after the attack that claimed 51 lives and seriously injured about 30 people. …

A spokesperson for the Canterbury District Health Board said two people injured in the attack remained in Burwood Hospital in a stable condition."

Today I walked past one of the mosques in Christchurch - AL Noor. There are still many floral tributes, many freshly placed, and nice hand-painted stones expressing words of support and peace. Autumn leaves swirl around me and the mosque-goers smiled at each other and passerbys with resilient love.

The monstrous mosque shooter has pleaded not guilty to murder and terror charges.

He will stand trial next year after today denying 51 charges of murder, 40 of attempted murder and one terrorism offence.

He watched the proceedings in the High Court via video link from prison and smiled as his lawyer entered the pleas to all 92 charges.

Man accused of Christchurch mosque shootings pleads not guilty to 51 murder charges

There are no words to describe how utterly evil this individual is. I hope he's smiling on the other side of his face when he's sentenced to life in prison.

The courtroom was filled with victims – survivors and family members of the 51 killed during the March 15 attack at two Christchurch mosques – with many more watching from two overflow rooms inside the courthouse via audio visual link. They reacted with gasps when the not guilty pleas were entered.

A trial date of May 4 was confirmed by Justice Mander. The trial could last around six weeks. Defence counsel Shane Tait believes it could take up to three months.

He was remanded in custody to a case review hearing on August 16 at 9.15am.

Crown Solicitor Mark Zarifeh formally laid another murder charge, two additional attempted murder charges, and a charge under the Terrorism Suppression Act 2002.

The court has received two health assessors' reports that were ordered at the last court hearing under section 38 of the Mental Health Act to determine whether he was mentally fit or impaired and whether he is mentally able to enter pleas to the charges.

Christchurch mosque shootings: Accused gunman Brenton Tarrant set for next court appearance

A ban on New Zealand media showing the face of the shooter arrested over the Christchurch mosque shootings has been dropped.

High Court Justice Cameron Mander said, "The Crown has advised there is no longer a need for the images of the defendant's face to be suppressed and the order now lapses" he said.

Prison authorities have confirmed he has had no access to television, radio, newspapers or visitors.

Outside the building, there was anger.
"He's a coward... He was laughing. Just put me, for 15 minutes, with him in one cell and then we'll see if he can laugh anymore," said Aziz Abdul - who became a local hero after defending the Linwood mosque with an Eftpos machine during the live-streamed shootings.
"It was very hard for us even just to look at him."

Christchurch mosque shootings: Accused gunman Brenton Tarrant set for next court appearance

So glad he is going to stand trial and, hopefully, suffer the full extent of NZ's justice system.

Judge Mander said in a statement on Friday: "No issue arises regarding the defendant's fitness to plead, to instruct counsel, and to stand his trial. A fitness hearing is not required."
He is currently being kept in isolation at the Auckland Prison in Paremoremo, considered New Zealand's toughest prison.

I think the pics they are showing are from his first court appearance in March. Captions say "Brenton Tarrant in his first court appearance in March". And they have him in isolation now.

He appeared by video link today.

Thanks South,I wonder how much this court case is going to cost NZ,I hope Australia will chip in .

Absolute ****** for going for not guilty.

I think he's going to turn it into a circus like the Anders Breivik trial with numerous stupid requests and defiant slogans.

You get the impression that all this is real life 'trolling' to him with his whole act of streaming and the 'manifesto'. The trial is just adding to it further.

Yes, I agree. He is a white supremacist and will probably try to use his court case to further exhibit his far right ideologies.

NZ is not the country to do that in. They are about as far away from far right as a country can get. It won't be tolerated there.

'Love always wins', what a beautiful sentiment.
There is a certainty to that statement.

51st Christchurch terror attack victim named
June 14, 2019

"Christchurch: The 51st victim of the Christchurch mosque shootings battled for his life for 48 days before succumbing to his injuries.
Zekeriya Tuyan, 46, died on May 2 – taking the death toll from the March 15 shootings to 51.

Shot in the chest at the Masjid Al Noor on Deans Ave, he remained in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital after the attack, battling fevers and infections.

Tuyan can be named for the first time after Justice Cameron Mander lifted the suppression on the names of some of the victims, after the accused gunman pleaded not guilty to all charges in court on Friday."
