What we know so far

• At 1:40pm a gunman entered the Masjid Al Noor Mosque in central Christchurch and opened fire
• There are reports of casualties with local media are reporting some people have died, with witnesses saying they saw “lots of bodies” on the ground, though police have not confirmed the number of those injured or dead.
• This is an active shooter situation, with police responding to more gunshots fired at other locations across the city.
• The city remains under lockdown, with central Christchurch evacuated, children who were participating in the climate strikes were evacuated, schools are under lockdown.
• Police have confirmed to the Guardian that there is a bomb in a car that has crashed on Strickland Street in the city. People are being evacuated from the area.
• Police are entering properties in Deyell Crescent, they are telling evacuees “you don’t want to know what is happening”.
• Prime minister Jacinda Ardern cancelled all her afternoon activities and is set to address media at 4pm local time (in about half an hour).

Sources have told our reporter on the ground, Eleanor Ainge Roy, that police are searching for three people inside the area that has been cordoned off, as well as a white van.

New pictures show the progress of a controversial mural of Jacinda Ardern on a Melbourne silo.

The mural has been shrouded in controversy after it was revealed that street artist Loretto Lizzio would paint on the silo the iconic image of the New Zealand PM hugging a Muslim woman after the Christchurch mosque attack.

But the mural was approved by the local council, and a new photo shows the artwork very close to completion.

"Commissioner of Police Mike Bush said a charge of engaging in a terrorist act under section 6A of the Terrorism Suppression Act 2002 has been filed.

"The charge will allege that a terrorist act was carried out in Christchurch on 15 March 2019 and follows consultation between Police, Crown Law and the Christchurch Crown Solicitors Office," he said.

"An additional murder charge and two additional attempted murder charges have also been filed.

"Fifty-one charges of murder, 40 of attempted murder and one charge under the Terrorism Suppression Act have now been filed against [the alleged gunman]."

Today I walked past one of the mosques in Christchurch - AL Noor. There are still many floral tributes, many freshly placed, and nice hand-painted stones expressing words of support and peace. Autumn leaves swirl around me and the mosque-goers smiled at each other and passerbys with resilient love.

He will stand trial next year after today denying 51 charges of murder, 40 of attempted murder and one terrorism offence.

He watched the proceedings in the High Court via video link from prison and smiled as his lawyer entered the pleas to all 92 charges.

He was remanded in custody to a case review hearing on August 16 at 9.15am.

Crown Solicitor Mark Zarifeh formally laid another murder charge, two additional attempted murder charges, and a charge under the Terrorism Suppression Act 2002.

The court has received two health assessors' reports that were ordered at the last court hearing under section 38 of the Mental Health Act to determine whether he was mentally fit or impaired and whether he is mentally able to enter pleas to the charges.

A ban on New Zealand media showing the face of the shooter arrested over the Christchurch mosque shootings has been dropped.

High Court Justice Cameron Mander said, "The Crown has advised there is no longer a need for the images of the defendant's face to be suppressed and the order now lapses" he said.

Prison authorities have confirmed he has had no access to television, radio, newspapers or visitors.

So glad he is going to stand trial and, hopefully, suffer the full extent of NZ's justice system.


Judge Mander said in a statement on Friday: "No issue arises regarding the defendant's fitness to plead, to instruct counsel, and to stand his trial. A fitness hearing is not required."
He is currently being kept in isolation at the Auckland Prison in Paremoremo, considered New Zealand's toughest prison.

The trial is slated to run for about 6 weeks. It won't be cheap, as far as court costs go.

Yes, I agree. He is a white supremacist and will probably try to use his court case to further exhibit his far right ideologies.

NZ is not the country to do that in. They are about as far away from far right as a country can get. It won't be tolerated there.

"Christchurch: The 51st victim of the Christchurch mosque shootings battled for his life for 48 days before succumbing to his injuries.
Zekeriya Tuyan, 46, died on May 2 – taking the death toll from the March 15 shootings to 51.

Shot in the chest at the Masjid Al Noor on Deans Ave, he remained in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital after the attack, battling fevers and infections.

Tuyan can be named for the first time after Justice Cameron Mander lifted the suppression on the names of some of the victims, after the accused gunman pleaded not guilty to all charges in court on Friday."
