More items of interest have been found in relation to the search for missing real estate agent Yanfei Bao, police say.

After taking time to reassess the investigation on Monday, police continued searching on the outskirts of Christchurch on Tuesday morning - shifting focus to roads and farmland near Greenpark.

Det Insp Nicola Reeves couldn't reveal what items were found or who they belong to but remained confident the 44-year-old's body would be found.

"We've got a really dedicated and invested investigation team who have skin in the game for this inquiry," she told Newshub. "We are determined and very hopeful that we will bring Yanfei home.

"We're assessing information that comes into the investigation, we have the very best expertise within the investigation and within the people that are coordinating the search for us - I'm very hopeful that we will find her and bring her home.

"Our hope will never fade… and we will exhaust all enquiries; whatever it is that we need to do, wherever we need to look."

Det Insp Nicola Reeves is gifted at inspiring hope. She's rallied a highly competent and efficient team who follow her lead with hope and faith in finding Yanfei.

If the police needed the citizens help, they'd make it known. The rainy weather hampered searching but they worked other avenues because they haven't stopped working to find our victim, Ms Bao. I am impressed with their progress thus far.

Since this horrible tragedy happened within two months of the suspects arrival in NZ, I do believe this person came with the intention and purpose of murder and mayhem then hoped he'd flee back to China before being caught and arrested. Thanks to good police work they'll prosecute their suspect. Difficult as it may be, we must wait for his trial for most details.

LE have repeatedly asked NZ public for any info they may have re: sighting of the 2 cars and/or any suspicious behaviour

Police search teams are currently focusing on an area of Canterbury farmland in their search for missing real estate agent Yanfei Bao, 44, who disappeared while door-knocking in Wigram on July 19.

Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves told 1News the focus of the search today and tomorrow will be the Hudsons Rd area in Greenpark, south of Lincoln.

"We're focusing on a lot of farmland today," she said. "Information coming into the investigation and help from members of the public is pointing us out into this area as an area of interest.

"We've been out here searching for several days over the last few weeks, and this is just another area that needs to be looked at.

"The investigation team is really determined to bring Yanfei Bao home," Reeves said. "We don't put a time frame on how long that takes.

"We'll do everything that we can to find her."

It’s a paddock on a dairy farm, fringed by trees on one side, and a half empty silage mound on the other.

Discarded tyres that once weighed down the plastic wrap lie in scattered heaps, half hidden in overgrown mounds, and gorse dross.

While three weeks of extensive searching has not resulted in finding Bao, Reeves says there isn’t a timeline to scale back the search. Instead, the investigation team is working in close “synergy” with those searching to assess the areas they should prioritise.

52-year-old Bryndwr man was charged with kidnapping Bao. On Tuesday, Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves said he had been charged with murder.

“Police believe the items have been discarded in the Christchurch area sometime from approximately midday on Wednesday 19 July, to about 5pm Saturday 22 July,” Reeves said.

“The spade is brand new."

Police’s Specialist Search Group will today be back in farmland in Greenpark, south of Christchurch, conducting further searches as part of the investigation."


Police are searching for Yanfei, the new spade, the top, and the tracksuit.

Perhaps this image is taken from cctv where the killer purchased the new spade. This is dreadful news but I'm glad he's in jail. My head is bowed in respect for Ms Bao. May justice be swift.

So this interview by Lisa Owen on RNZ (Radio New Zealand) Checkpoint with DI Nicola Reeves is an interesting (kinda) watch...Lisa presses DI Reeves to elaborate on who was wearing the clothes sought and where but she wasn't gonna play ball! I guess she's not being frank to protect the Crown's Prosecution...I mean it's bloomin' obvious who's wearing the clothes and that cctv captured them buying the spade but I guess she can't say it publicly

"Whether it's been discarded on the side of the road or hidden somewhere, and people happen to see it on their travels, then we would like to be contacted about that."

She would not be drawn on the significance of any of the items, except that the same person was wearing both the tracksuit and the sweater.

One of the photos appeared to show the wearer in a hardware store. Reeves would not confirm this, nor whether it was the man who has been charged, perhaps buying the spade after the alleged murder.

"I'm not going to get into a theory with you or an explanation of how the investigation is being pieced together," Reeves said..

How a spade and clothing are linked to the murder and kidnapping of missing Christchurch woman Yanfei Bao is something police will not be drawn on.

But police said they were important, as would be any locations in which they were found.

A 52-year-old man pleaded not guilty to Bao's murder when he appeared in the High Court at Christchurch on Tuesday afternoon.
