Human remains found in Cumberland County

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.J. (CBS) — New Jersey State Police is asking the public’s for help after the body of a woman was found burned and dismembered on July 2.
State police say that a passerby found the remains of Tonya Cook, 32, off of Banks and Lummistown Roads in Lawrence Township.

Cook was from Vineland, N.J., but is known to have ties throughout Cumberland County.

Police have not said how she died, how her remains ended up in the field or if they have any suspects.

Anyone with information about the homicide investigation is asked to contact the Port Norris Station at 856-785-0036.

"Tonya Marie Cook was a very kind and Beautiful Black Women," according to the post. "Tonya touched many hearts with her smile and always put others before herself."

Her brother, Timothy Cook, took to Facebook to describe his family's pain. "Feeling numb, lost and hurt," he wrote. "I want justice for my sister."

The New Jersey State Police Homicide South Unit, Troop "A" Criminal Investigations Office and the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office are handling the investigation.

State police have arrested Dennis Parrish, 52, of Vineland in connection with the homicide investigation of Tonya Cook, 32, of Vineland, whose remains were discovered earlier this month in Lawrence Township.

On Thursday, the New Jersey State Police Fugitive unit, along with detectives from the State Police Homicide South Unit and Troop “A” Criminal Investigations Office, located and arrested Parrish at a hotel in Absecon.

Parrish was charged with desecration of human remains and moving human remains. He is lodged at Cumberland County Jail where he awaits a bail detention hearing.

Vineland, NJ- A Vineland man on trial for the gruesome murder of Tonya Cook had been found guilty of first-degree murder and two separate counts of desecrating human remains. On Friday, Parrish was sentenced to life in prison without parole eligibility for 63 years.

57-year-old Dennis Parrish killed Tonya Cook and dismembered her body before setting it on fire. According to court documents, after killing Cook and dismembering her body, he drove her remains to a farm in the Cedarville section of Lawrence Township, where he said her remains on fire.

In addition to life in prison, Parrish also received two consecutive 10-year prison sentences for setting Cook’s body on fire and for desecrating her remains.
