The mother of an 8-year-old boy and a second woman have been found guilty of endangering the welfare of a child after authorities said they kept the boy locked day and night in a room reeking of urine with no bed, furniture, lights or toys and no access to the bathroom.

The boy had been locked in his room day and night by Morris and Jung, prosecutors said.

“He was not allowed to use the bathroom in the residence and was excluded from socializing with the rest of the family,” Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer’s office said in a news release. “The room contained no bed, no furniture, no lights and no toys.”

Officials removed the boy and two other minors from the home. They were taken to a hospital to be evaluated before all three children were placed in foster care.

How does a mother go from being pregnant, presumably having a baby shower, giving birth to years later doing this. Does it start gradually and just progress? And it usually seems like there are two parental figures and other unaffected kids. How can both adults be so depraved that one adult doesn’t say Enough! And help the child? And how many kids are living like this right now?

After a week-long jury trial before the Honorable Lisa A. Puglisi, J.S.C., the jury concluded beyond a reasonable doubt that Jung and Morris abused and neglected a minor in their care. Jung and Morris are scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Puglisi on July 7, 2023, at which time they face up to ten years New Jersey State Prison. Both Morris and Jung were remanded into custody after the jury delivered the guilty verdict. They will both remain in the Ocean County Jail until their sentencing hearing.

Helecia L. Morris, 41, of Brick Township, was sentenced to eight years in prison and Donna A. Jung, 57, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, to seven years for their convictions on charges of endangering the welfare of a child in the abuse of Morris's then-8-year-old son between April 1, 2015, and Jan. 9, 2016, in Brick Township

Morris additionally was sentenced to four years in prison in connection with an unrelated theft charge and 18 months in prison for a shoplifting charge, which Puglisi ordered to run concurrently to each other, but run consecutively to Morris's eight-year sentence on the child endangerment charge.
