BATAVIA, NY - An Elmira woman is being held on charges of poisoning her 21-month old stepson.

Melissa Englehardt, 24, was arrested and charged with first degree manslaughter after an investigation by Elmira and Batavia police departments.

The toddler, Andrew, lived with his mother, Kristen Cianfrini, in Batavia. He died November 10 at his father’s home in Elmira. The Monroe County medical examiners office reported the cause of death as methanol poisoning. Methanol is found in anti-freeze, windshield washer fluid and dry gas.

The put it in his bottle, and she is pregnant with twins!!!!!
Why manslaughter it should be 1st degree premeditated murder.What a horrible death for that poor baby.They should make her drink a gallon of antifreeze and then just leave her in a cell.What a !!!If she could not handle having a stepson she should not have been with his father.What is going on it is unreal how many baby are being murdered each day!

Of course after she has her babies why should they suffer because they will be born to a heartless cruel murdering .But as soon as they are delivered she should not even get to hold them. She should be given a nice tall glass of juice with the same thing she put in that poor babys bottle.

Probably because the daddy had to pay child support and the daddy may have even paid to much attention to the little guy and she was jealous! I've heard of that happenning.

Yup. That could be a part of the picture. How about the connection that must still be there between the mother of his only son and himself? :waitasec:
She has a chance now to have his only son if this child she is carrying is a boy. Mission accomplished?

I am going to withhold my opinion for now. I remember watching a program on tv where a baby boy died and his autopsy showed he'd died of antifreeze poisoning. Mommy went to prison. Gave birth to a 2nd child. 2nd child is in a foster home and begins displaying symptoms of antifreeze poisoning. Eventually, both children (the big brother who died, and baby brother who was displaying symptoms) were found to have a genetic defect which caused a condition that VERY CLOSELY mimicked antifreeze poisoning. His little brain showed crystalization that is common in antifreeze poisoning...... They even tested the baby's bottle and it showed signs of having contained antifreeze, but more sophisticated tests by a more experienced scientist showed that the substance in the bottle was NOT antifreeze, it was crystals formed from the baby's (I don't know how to describe this....) from the baby's backwash into the bottle. The crystals in his brain were also the result of a genetic defect.

It took a very long time for that mommy to prove that she had not killed her son. In fact, if her second child had not suffered from the same genetic defect, she'd probably STILL be in prison.

While it is very easy in today's world to believe that a step-mom would poison her step-child in a New York second, I just can't get that other case out of my mind. So I am going to withhold judgment, I am going to try to hope and pray this baby wasn't murdered. I am going to try to believe he had a genetic defect.

And, yeah, I know, what are the odds of that?

id like to add to that, the diffrence in that case was the anti freeze was found on the part of the bottle where he drank from....(i.e. came from his own lips) not in the milk itself

I do understand what you are saying. I would hope that noone would ever harm a child. I know that there are cases where mistakes can be made based on rare or underfunded or understood medical conditions. I respect that you would like to wait for more information. Sources in Elmira tell WBTA News that Englehardt placed the Methanol substance in the child’s sippy cup a day or two before he died. Englehardt is in the Chemung County jail without bail.

I'm glad you remembered the case I was trying to describe. I am sorry that I cannot remember the name of the child who died, or his mother who was sentenced to prison, but as much as I try to remember, I just can't.

I know that the probability is that this stepmother killed the little boy. I guess I just am hoping against hope that his death was the result of a natural process, and not murder.

If she did this, manslaughter doesn't even begin to describe what she did. She should be charged with first degree murder, she should be never ever be set free to harm another innocent child.
