Ramapo cops reinvestigating woman's 1981 disappearance as homicide

RAMAPO — Based on a tipster's information, Ramapo police detectives have reopened a case involving a woman's disappearance from the Monsey area in April 1981 as a homicide.

Darlene Ellen Conklin's brother said the family has long believed someone killed his sister.
...............
Ramapo police said they are trying find police reports concerning a body found somewhere in the country wrapped in a Westchester moving van company’s blanket around the same time Conklin’s family reported her missing. Their hope is the report describes the victim’s physique and refers to tattoos on her hands.

FRANKLIN — Police are offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest of the person responsible for what is believed to be a 3-decade-old murder of a former Franklin woman in Ramapo, N.Y.

The woman — Darlene Ellen Conklin — disappeared on April 19, 1981. An investigation at the time was inconclusive about whether she was murdered, but her case was reopened in September 2010 after police received a tip pointing to homicide.

Conklin grew up in Franklin, and police believe some Sussex County residents may know something about Conklin’s disappearance, said Sgt. Thomas Dolan, of the Ramapo Police Department.

“There is a strong possibility that through word of mouth people know about the incident or someone has information that could lead to Darlene or other evidence,” Dolan said.

The New York State Crime Stoppers, along with the Ramapo Police Department, are offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information connected to the ongoing investigation.

Conklin, at age 21, disappeared from her home in Monsey, N.Y., where she lived with her boyfriend, Stephen Szanyi. Szanyi, who Dolan said is considered a person of interest, now lives in Newton.

A break in the case came four years ago when a tipster told Dolan that an acquaintance described killing a woman and disposing of her body in 1981. The informant did not know the woman’s name or other details about where her body was dumped, Dolan said.

Additional police interviews supported the belief that Conklin was murdered, but enough information has not been available to make an arrest, Dolan said.

Ramapo police have also been trying since the 1980s to identify the unknown police agency that was reported to have responded around the time of Conklin’s disappearance to Whalen’s Moving and Storage in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., with a Polaroid photograph of a woman who was believed to have been murdered, wrapped in a Whalen-labeled moving blanket.

Dolan said the woman in the photograph is now believed to be Conklin.

Szanyi worked for Whalen’s Moving and Storage at the time.

“We can’t seem to find anything associated with (that homicide investigation),” Dolan said.

Conklin was 5-foot-8, 110 pounds with green eyes and brown hair. She had tattoos on her hands that read “love” and either “jerry,” “terry” or “hate.”

Persons with information are asked to call the New York State Crime Stoppers anonymous hotline at 1-866-313-TIPS or to go to the website at www.nyscrimestoppers.org. A downloadable mobile app is available for smart phones.

No new news; apparently the reward wasn't as useful as they hoped.

Details of Disappearance

Conklin was last seen in Monsey, New York sometime during April 1981. She lived with her boyfriend in a house off routes 59 and 306 at the time, and frequented the waterfront beach area of Haverstraw, New York, near the U.S. Gypsum plant. She has never been heard from again.

Her mother filed a missing persons report later that year after the family suddenly stopped hearing from her; Conklin had always kept in contact with her relatives by phone. Her boyfriend stated she would drop out of sight from time to time, and one day she simply left and never came back.

Authorities believe Conklin may have been murdered shortly after her 1981 disappearance, but little information is available in her case. Ramapo, New York police are investigating.
