A Nassau University Medical Center doctor vanished this week "under suspicious circumstances" from a Westbury house where he occasionally slept after working overnight, police said Friday.

Joseph Kazigo, 67, an emergency room surgeon, was last seen Wednesday at the East Meadow hospital, Nassau police said.

His wife, Caroline Kazigo, said Friday she couldn't imagine where her husband is.

"He is lost and we don't know what is going on," she said in a telephone interview from the couple's Lincolndale home in Westchester County. "We don't know what happened and we are all scared."

She added, "I just can't talk anymore about my husband. I just know he's missing."

Sobbing, she hung up.

Last night, the Nassau County police and the state police searched the house in Lincolndale, Westchester County, that Dr. Kazigo shares with his wife when not at his Westbury home near the hospital.

Dr. Kazigo is black, 5-foot-3, 140 pounds and balding.

A Long Island doctor who went missing earlier this week was bludgeoned to death by his 26-year-old son, who has been arrested on suspicion of murder, Nassau County police said Saturday.

Homicide detectives interviewed the doctor's son, Mulumba Kazigo, and arrested him in connection with his father's death, according to a statement from Nassau County police. Mulumba Kazigo, a Lincolnville resident, allegedly entered the Westbury home and repeatedly hit his father with a blunt object, police said.

Kazigo's body has not been located, police said.

I can't imagine that either. That son must have been in a horrible rage to do something like that. I'm confused, did the murder take place at the doctor's home or at the home where he rented a room close to the hospital? If it was at his home I wonder where his wife was and why she wouldn't have seen the broken door/window and the blood and if it was the place where he rented a room why didn't someone hear anything because the son broke the door and smashed the window. And why wouldn't they have seen the blood? I wonder what that kid did with his father? I would hate to be in the mother's shoes....your child murders your husband. I can't even imagine how that must feel. I wonder what the marriage was like? All kinds of questions with no answers.

Investigators found the body in a wooded area near Muscoot reservoir in the town of Lewisboro yesterday, a day after arresting Mulumba Kazigo on an attempted murder charge. Immediately after the discovery, police upgraded the charge to second-degree murder.

Kazigo will be arraigned today at First District Court in Hempstead, said police, who declined to discuss details.

An emergency room doctor who disappeared from his apartment on Long Island last week was bludgeoned to death by his 26-year-old son and dumped near an upstate reservoir, the Nassau County police said yesterday.

Dr. Joseph Kazigo, 67, was bludgeoned to death, the police say.




The doctor, Joseph Kazigo, 67, was attacked at a house in Westbury where he rented an apartment, according to the authorities. The son, Mulumba Kazigo, 26, who lives in Lincolndale, Westchester County, repeatedly struck his father with a blunt object, then took him to a wooded area near the Muscoot reservoir in Lewisboro, about 60 miles away. That is where the police said they found his body yesterday.



Neighbors in Westbury and Lincolndale described Dr. Kazigo as an avid jogger who came to the United States from Uganda more than 30 years ago. They said he had seven children, including two who had joined the Army. At least one, John Kazigo, attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, a neighbor said.
Shelley Lotenberg, a spokeswoman for Nassau University Medical Center, said Dr. Kazigo had worked as a trauma surgeon at the hospital since 1998 and was widely respected by his peers. Inez Enflenku, a nurse in the triage unit, said she last spoke to him on Wednesday morning. At the time, she said, there was no sign of imminent trouble.

Mulumba Kazigo graduated in 1998 from Somers High School in Lincolndale, where he ran track, according to the high school yearbook. Rebecca Kreppel, one of his classmates, said he was quiet and respectful of his father, who, she added, could be a firm disciplinarian.

He was arrested in Nassau County on Friday after being interviewed by detectives and is scheduled to be arraigned today. The police yesterday declined to give a cause of death in the case or to provide a motive.

The son of a Long Island surgeon fiendishly plotted his father's "execution" - then bashed him with a bat and slit his throat while he slept, authorities said yesterday.

Mulumba Kazigo, 26, was charged with murder Saturday after he led detectives to woods in Lewisboro, Westchester County, where he had dumped the corpse of his father, Joseph Kazigo, 67, cops said. At an arraignment yesterday, he was ordered back to jail despite appeals by his attorney Francis Ssekandi that he be allowed to attend his father's funeral Wednesday.

Police painted a different picture, one of a calculating son whounleashed pent-up fury after a long-running feud with his dad, who came from Ugandan royalty and was known as a strict disciplinarian.

The bludgeoning death of a Nassau University Medical Center emergency room surgeon was the culmination of longstanding tension with the son charged with his murder, Nassau police said yesterday.

Mulumba Kazigo, 26, of Lincolndale, planned the death of Dr. Joseph Kazigo several days in advance, authorities said yesterday, purchasing weapons, plastic and tape to wrap the body, and using a family car to dispose of the corpse within 10 minutes of the family's Westchester home.

Nakizito Kazigo, one of the suspect's sisters, said in court that her brother was on Effexor XR, an anti-depressant, and that it was "important that he be on it."

There was no indication yesterday that the drug had played a role in the killing, but the drug's side effects can include hostility, worsening depression and suicidal thoughts, according to Healthwise, a nonprofit organization. There have been reports throughout the nation of people who allegedly committed violent crimes while on the drug, including a Maryland teen who poisoned his best friend and is serving a life sentence.

The drug's manufacturer, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Inc., warns on its Web site that patients should be "watched for becoming agitated, irritable, hostile, impulsive or restless."

They have described how Dr. Kazigo shoved the head of one of his daughters through a window and then stitched up her cuts without anesthesia. They also attribute the mental illness of four of the children, including Mulumba, to what they say was the father's cruelty...
