Hernandez walks into courtroom; after officer removes handcuffs, he turns and waves to his wife & daughter. Second time I've seen him smile.

Jurors walk into room. Defense Attorney Harvey Fishbein attempts to make eye contact with all 12 of them. The stakes are mounting.

Wow. #EtanPatz jurors getting down & dirty in legalese of this case. Want to know if it's legally required to tape all PD interviews in NJ.

Thanks for this update. I am not optimistic that the jury will be able to reach a verdict. This is a very difficult case I am glad I'm not on it.

Fourth day of jury deliberations - no verdict jury gone home for day

"The jury in the trial of the man accused of killing 6-year-old Etan Patz nearly 36 years ago is deliberating for a fourth day Monday.

Jurors received the case against 54-year-old Pedro Hernandez on Wednesday afternoon.

The jury on Monday asked for a weather report from May 25, 1979, the day Etan went missing; all phone records between Hernandez and his brother-in-law, Juan Santana, who turned him in to police; a blueprint of 113 Thompson St., where Etan’s body was allegedly dumped; and translated transcripts of phone conversations at Rikers Island between Hernandez and his current wife, Rosemary."

If they can't convict on confession alone, what else is there?

Nothing, as far as I can see. I'm surprised the jury didn't acquit in one day, but alot of people rate confessions far too highly as evidence.

What a strange case. I feel so sorry for Etan's family. I wonder if their thoughts are conflicted.

What a strange case. I feel so sorry for Etan's family. I wonder if their thoughts are conflicted.

I asked her if the Patz family believes that Hernandez and not the long-suspected Jose Ramos — boyfriend of Etan Patz’s baby-sitter and a convicted pedophile already doing life for unrelated crimes — is the monster who murdered Etan Patz.

“You’ll have to ask the Patz family that,” she [Joan Illuzzi-Orbon, lead Manhattan prosecutor] says. “I do know they are hoping for a conviction in this trial.”

Interesting that Etan's family are hoping for the conviction of Hernandez. I'm really not sure what to think. Hernandez confessed to Etan's murder not just once, but multiple times through the years. Is that pattern typical for people who give false confessions? Most whom I have heard of, including those who are convicted based on their own confession, immediately begin proclaiming their innocence. Perhaps if Hernandez had been tried and convicted after his initial confession, he would be proclaiming his innocence to the present. IDK.

On the other hand, the evidence against Ramos is very compelling.

If Hernandez is truly innocent, he must have some very deep-seated feelings of guilt that have defied psychological intervention. Where has that guilt stemmed from? An overwhelming sense of guilt is associated with depression and OCD, but do these psychological conditions ever bring about false confessions to a murder?

I don't know what to think. It's just bizarre. The Ramos connection is there, but Hernandez's confessions throw me off base. I wish I had a deeper understanding of his psycho-related illness.

"NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The jury in the trial of the man accused of killing Etan Patz resumed deliberations Wednesday.
Jurors asked for a list of all those who testified over the course of the 10-week trial, CBS2’s Jessica Schneider reported."

News from start of day 6

"Jury deliberations in the Etan Patz murder trial are now in its sixth day inside a Manhattan court.

The panel made another request yesterday, asking for read backs of the confessions made by Pedro Hernandez.

Although he admitted several times to killing the six-year-old boy in 1979, Hernandez's lawyers say his low IQ made him an easy target for a false confession.

The defense says they're not worried about the jury's request.

"They're taking it step by step. There's nothing that they've asked, nor do they seem to be at odds with each other. This jury is intent, they're all taking notes when they come out, they're listening to what the judge has to say or the testimony that's being read back. I think they're working their way through the evidence. What that all means I can't tell you but I don't see a divided jury at this point," said Defense Attorney Harvey Fishbein."

"Jurors will decide whether Hernandez is guilty or not on three separate charges: second-degree murder, felony murder and kidnapping.

The two different murder charges result from different theories under the law. If the jury finds that Hernandez deliberately killed Etan, they will convict him on second-degree murder charges.

If the panel decides Etan’s death resulted from actions during the course of a kidnapping, they will find him guilty on the felony murder charge.

Each of the three charges is punishable by 25 years to life in prison"
