Fire personnel responding to reports of smoke at the 36th Street station in Sunset Park found multiple people shot.

A photo from the scene showed people tending to bloodied passengers lying on the floor station.

New York City police said they were responding to reports of people wounded either by gunfire or an explosion.

SUBWAY UPDATE (CNN) — The FDNY tells CNN that 13 people have been transported to area hospitals after the Brooklyn subway incident. Earlier sources said that 5 have been shot. Working to identify the nature of potential injuries of the 13 that were sent to hospital.

The suspect was apparently still on the loose. He was described as 180 pounds wearing a gas mask an orange vest and carrying a construction bag. The suspect reportedly threw something into the air.

I hope and pray everyone who has been injured will not have life threatening injuries and they will recover as well as possible. There are distressing images of the crime scene and victims on the NY Post website of the crime scene it must have been extremely frightening for everyone.

Many of the victims will most likely require emergency surgery for gun shot wounds, one male victim appears to have been shot in the leg but hopefully all the victims have gunshot wounds that have missed major organs. Other victims are lying on the subway platform but it isn’t clear where they may have been shot and where they are bleeding from.

I really hope the suspect will be arrested alive and nobody else is harmed.

Are there normally members of law enforcement on the NY subway platforms and entrances and exits in uniform or undercover in normal clothing? I just wondered what the security is normally like with the worrying increase in crime that has been reported in NY.

I had to text my son this morning to make sure he got to work ok after reading about this. (He did and is fine). He travels on LIRR to Brooklyn station and takes subway to lower Manhattan and would have been traveling around this time.
**Feels like I have to check on both my kids and their spouses regularly as all 4 work in NYC (between subway attacks and sidewalk attacks).

I don't believe that there would be a lot of nypd assigned to this area bc there are other areas/stations where the subway crime stats have risen dramatically. I could be wrong, but I don't think this would be a priority area/station for nypd
