Breaking: Police Searching For Human Remains In Uniondale
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Police on Long Island say they are searching for human remains they believe were buried in Uniondale and may have been a victim of gang violence.

According to authorities in Nassau County, police are searching for the unidentified person in an area east of Kellenberg Memorial High School.

The search began around 8 a.m. Wednesday. It is currently not known how police were alerted to search for the remains.

The MS-13 gang has been blamed for all of the deaths, according to the AP.

It is not known if MS-13 is the gang eyed in Wednesday’s investigation."

"There have been several similar searches relating to tips on missing teens who have ended up being murdered by MS-13, including the massacre of four young men in a Long Island park in April of 2017. A reputed member of the gang pleaded guilty for his role in those murders last week."

The search happened despite temperatures approaching 100 degrees.

Nassau police said Benitez-Hernandez and at least four other members of the crime syndicate with ties to El Salvador took part in the Aug. 13, 2017, slaying in a sump east of the Meadowbrook State Parkway."

A “self-admitted” MS-13 gang member with a violent criminal history was charged in the murder of a teen whose remains were found in New York a year after he was "viciously and barbarically" killed, officials said.

Carlos Benitez-Hernandez, 21, was arraigned Thursday on a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of a teen, who authorities did not identify. Benitez-Hernandez was arrested Wednesday after authorities uncovered human remains in a shallow grave in East Meadow on Long Island.
 
Five alleged MS-13 members appeared in court this week as suspects in the August 2017 slaying of Carlos Rivas-Majano, 22, of Uniondale, who was found in a shallow grave off Glenn Curtiss Boulevard in East Meadow one year after his death. All pleaded not guilty and are being held in jail without bail, according to court records.

Two MS-13 gang members will spend decades behind bars after they were sentenced for their roles in the August 2017 machete murder of a 22-year-old man whose body was eventually discovered in a wooded area in Uniondale, according to prosecutors.


Luis Alejandro Varela, 24 and from Mineola, as well as William Reyes-Fuentes, 27 and from Uniondale, pleaded guilty on June 24 to charges of murder in the second degree and conspiracy in the second degree in connection to the hacking death of Carlos Rivas-Majano, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. Varela was sentenced to 21 years to life in prison and Reyes-Fuentes was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. Both are said to be members of the Downtown Criminals clique of MS-13.

Cases against co-defendants Carlos Benitez-Hernandez, Jose Quintanilla-Cruz and Nerlin Chacon-Ruano are pending, according to the prosecution. Attorney information for the three was not immediately available.
