PRESS RELEASE

Cold Case Tuesday: The New York State Police continue to investigate the nearly 33-year-old death of an unidentified male.

The New York State Police Troop K, Bureau of Criminal Investigation at SP Wappinger, continue to investigate the discovery of an unidentified deceased male.

The man’s body was found on April 2, 1985, in a wooded area off of Route 301, in the town of Philipstown, Putnam County. The location was not far from Canopus Lake and the Appalachian Trail.

The man’s remains indicated that he was a white male, possibly between the ages of 27 to 35 years old. He is thought to have been 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had brown hair. Dental records and DNA have not yet led to the man’s identity. A forensic facial reconstruction and a sketch were made to show what the man may have looked like. The man was found with no identifying paperwork, and only a few belongings which have also been provided.

Investigators from the State Police in Wappinger continue to ask for the public’s assistance to identify this man and help solve the circumstances surrounding his death.

Anyone with information about this case can contact SP Wappinger Bureau of Criminal Investigation at (845) 298-0952 or Troop K at (845) 677-7300. Refer to incident # 3032562.

CASE NUMBER - 5UMNJ

Is it me or does this reconstruction look just like this one on the thread?? Makes me just wonder how much of the reconstructions are true and how much are artists interpretation. And then how many are overlooked because the reconstructions don't look like the people they are trying to represent.

Marie Cortissoz, "Police attempt to ID Putnam skeleton," Mount Vernon Argus [White Plains, NY], 20 April 1985, 4MV.
_Police_attempt_to_ID_Putnam_skeleton_.jpg
The skeleton, which authorities estimated had been lying in the woods for about 20 months, appeared to belong to a 5-foot-10-inch, well-built white male in his late 20s or early 30s, state police said.

Police said they have not yet determined how the man, who appeared to have been healthy, died.

The skeleton was discovered April 2 by a motorist about 150 feet from Route 301, west of the Taconic State Parkway, and was clothed in four pairs of underwear, blue dungaree shorts, beige corduroy shorts, green army-style pants, three pairs of socks and size 10 Durham boots.

[...]

Police do not know if the man had been hiking before he died or why he was wearing so many clothes.

Police said they found a package of dental floss, a comb, two plastic prayer cards and a map of the New York-New Jersey area in pockets in the clothing.
