This case has a complete DNA profile on record, so here's hoping it gets solved one day!

On Friday night, March 29, 1991, 24-year-old Rachael Johnson was out doing Akron night clubs with her friend. At the end of the evening, she left in her friend's car to return home.

The car got a flat tire before they made it home. Police believe the killer may have had this planned and slashed the tire - especially because as the women pulled over to consider what to do about the tire, another car pulled up behind them.

Rachael insisted on leaving the car, saying she couldn't take the smell of burning rubber. The friend drove off once she made it clear she wasn't getting back into the car. It's unclear if Rachael got into the car that stopped behind them.

A few hours later, just after dawn, Rachael's body was discovered. She had been beaten, choked, stabbed, raped and then set on fire and left in the middle of the street.

A key suspect was a man named Daniel Wilson, who will be arrested, convicted and executed for the death of Carol Lutz, a woman he kidnapped from a bar in Elyria a month after Rachael's murder. He burned the woman alive in the trunk of her car.

However, Wilson's DNA did not match the DNA the police had on file, and he denied having anything to do with Rachael's death.

We've done a podcast episode on this case. It's called Ohio Mysteries, and direct links, photos and more can be found on our website at www.ohiomysteries.com. We also have an interview with Rachael's daughter, who was 2 when her mom was killed, and a woman who has been helping the daughter investigate this case over the past year.

They said they have been told by police that they are moving Rachael's case up the line for some DNA analysis.

Police in Akron, Ohio, say they have cracked a cold case using advanced DNA testing to arrest a man suspected of raping, beating, and murdering a 23-year-old woman before setting her body on fire in 1991.

Daniel L. Rees, 57, of Akron, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with aggravated murder.

He is suspected of killing Rachael M. Johnson, 23, whose body was found on March 30, 1991, in the Ohio town that lies about 40 miles south of Cleveland.

I’m so glad law enforcement finally got him.

Good job, my friend. You beat to it.

Cheryl Hester, director of genetic genealogy at the company, said Advance DNA was able to upload the unknown DNA profile to databases that could connect it to distant relatives. After matches were found, she said they reverse engineered a family tree and narrowed down who the suspect might be. In this case, the DNA only matched very distant relatives.

[...]

Combining that family tree with things like age, location and other known details, they could give Akron police a lead.

He said police were able to pick up trash left behind by Rees to collect DNA. The DNA profile they collected matched the unknown profile created from the DNA found in Johnson’s autopsy.

It was the first connection Rees had to the case, Pasheilich said.

Rees was apparently known to Johnson’s family and had been spotted in the same area Johnson was last seen alive. However, he was never mentioned in detectives’ case file.

At the time of her death, Johnson had a 3-year-old girl. The woman’s daughter, now 31, was particularly shocked to discover that Rees, who she’s known her entire life, was a suspect in her mother’s murder.

“It’s insane,” Katelin Puzakulics told the Beacon Journal last week. “It’s literally insane that this dude lived across the street and had the nerve to be a part of our lives.”

Puzakulics, who claimed she last saw Rees in 2007, said she has numerous childhood memories involving the now-suspected murderer.

“He took me on my very first motorcycle ride,” Puzakulics said. “He lived right across the street. He was always coming around. I never suspected him to be anything but harmless.”
