Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, Stark County Sheriff George T. Maier and Stark County Coroner Dr. Ron Rusnak have released a forensic reconstruction of an unidentified man whose remains were found on March 31, 2020.

“Take a close look – we need your help to identify this man,” Yost said. “We are hopeful that this reconstruction will jog someone’s memory and provide law enforcement with the tips necessary to bring closure to his loved ones.”

The male was located next to an oil well site about 20 yards off Sandy Avenue SE in Canton. The remains were completely skeletal, and the male is estimated to have been deceased at least two years.

“A special thanks for all of the efforts of our state and local partners to assist us in identifying our John Doe,” said Sheriff Maier.

A forensic artist with the Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation created a clay facial reconstruction of the man at the request of the Stark County Coroner’s Office. BCI’s Criminal Intelligence Unit released a corresponding public bulletin about the case today.

“I would like to personally thank everyone who has participated in efforts to identify our John Doe,” said Dr. Rusnak. “I am so proud of the work that you have done. It is now time to ask our community for their assistance. To the people of Stark County, please help us identify our John Doe so that we may bring closure to his family and assure justice is serviced.”

John Doe is believed to have been between 30 and 50 years old and between 5’1” and 5’9” tall. He was found wearing a navy blue, white and yellow T-shirt, black shorts and tennis shoes.

Anyone with information should contact the Stark County Sheriff’s Office at 330-430-3823. In addition to facial reconstruction models, BCI’s forensic artist is available to assist local law enforcement with the creation of post-mortem images and age-progression photographs to help locate missing persons.

BCI also offers the Project LINK (Linking Individuals Not Known) program, a free service to police, coroners and families of missing individuals. Project LINK was established through the Attorney General’s Office in 1999 to help find missing people, including by matching DNA from family members to DNA from unidentified remains. (DNA submitted by family members is used only for missing persons programs nationwide.)

Law enforcement officers or family members of missing persons interested in learning more about the services provided by BCI’s Missing Persons Unit should call 855-BCI-OHIO (855-224-6446).

At the time John Doe was found, he was wearing a navy blue, yellow and white striped shirt, black shorts and athletic shoes.

"We have a picture, a photograph of the recovered T-shirt and shoes in this in this release. So those are things of note that somebody might remember, recall maybe seeing him somewhere within the last couple of years prior to this or knowing someone that left, you know, a home wearing this type of clothing," said Stark County Sheriff George T. Maier.

John Doe also likely had no teeth in life and may have previously suffered rib fractures that healed before his death.

Stark County Coroner Dr. Ronald Rusnak said the cause and manner of his death haven't been determined and he isn't sure if it will ever be determined because John Doe's remains were decomposed to bones.

Rusnak said he had a skull fracture and shoulder fractures around the time of his death. He’s believed to be between 30 and 50 years old and standing between 5 feet, 1 inch to 5 feet, 9 inches tall.

“It’s suspicious that he died from traumatic injuries, but I don't know if we'll ever be able to determine that exactly,” said Rusknak ho called John Doe’s injuries “significant.

Someone found his bones scattered in the brush next to an oil well site 20 yards off Sandy Avenue Southeast in Canton.

“This is a rural area, farm community. It was a long lane back to an oil well site where the skeletal remains were found, I personally was on the scene when this body was discovered,” said Sheriff George Maier with the Stark County Sheriff’s Office.

They don’t know how this man died, but it’s estimated he had been dead for at least two years when he was found.

Seth Andrew Berhenne fits the age and height. Also had a history of drug use which could have resulted in missing teeth and arrests for drug trafficking which could be a possible motive for someone to have dumped his body. Location of the body is only an hour or so from where Seth was last seen.

That’s wonderful news! Thank you for sharing!

He was between 30 and 50 and had no teeth at all? Could it be that he lost teeth postmortem?

I believe he was edentulous ante mortem as the tooth sockets were healed. Plus, they recovered a lot of the remains which showed trauma so I would think they would have found a few teeth as well if they were present at the time.

Hopefully, we will learn more about him tomorrow during the press conference. I will be watching for sure.

During a news conference scheduled for Thursday morning at the Stark County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff George Maier and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost will identify the man as Mike Leach, News 5 has learned.

A genetic genealogy team from the DNA Doe Project will also be on hand to answer questions

At least we know he is not listed as a missing person, at least I could not find her. I honestly thought there is a resemblance with Howard Frederick Strupe, who was suggested above
The article says that a neighbor called police after not seeing Leach for weeks. Police went to his home in Dover, Ohio and noted that no one was there and that no odor was detected. The windows at Leach's home were open and a fan was on. The lack of a missing person report on him is so weird.

It's so wild to me that the police could get a report that someone hasn't seen their neighbour in a while, go out to their home, not find anyone, and then just shrug and say that's that. No follow up? No 'okay he's not here, so where is he'? No professional curiosity? I would understand if this was the 80s or 90s but this was recent.
