Starting a thread for this crime that occurred in Columbus, Ohio the morning of July 11, 2024 IIUC. Two suspects are still being sought. The young mother killed was an elementary school teacher.

July 11, 2024 Yahoo online article by Jackie Gillis entitled ‘‘Her character was unmatched’ — Family remembers Alexa Stakely’. This contains slightly more information on two apparent suspects sought:

Police reportedly said the 29-year-old mother went to an apartment complex on Blue Knoll Drive at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday to pick up her son from a babysitter. The newspaper reported that Stakely took her sleeping child to her a Honda CRV and went inside to grab some of the boy's belongings while the vehicle was running.

WLWT5 online July 12, 2024 article by Emily Sanderson entitled ‘Ohio mother dies while trying to save son from attempted carjacking’.

Scant details on the suspects in the article. And hopefully additional surveillance and cameras or video might assist. Other sources are needed to better identify the suspects and their clothing. From the article:

“Two men were seen running past Stakley, who was still lying in the road. The two hopped a fence and went into a neighboring apartment complex.

Police said surveillance video from that morning shows a group of men looking into apartments in the area of Castenea Way.

When the group was confronted, the men went further into the complex.

Two of the men seen on surveillance matched the description of the two from the carjacking.”

Just saw this -- absolutely awful. Thank goodness her son was unhurt.

An Ohio mother was killed as she tried to stop two carjackers from stealing her car with her 6-year-old son inside.
[...]
After putting her son in her SUV and starting the vehicle, Stakely ran back toward the home to get something from the babysitter.
As Stakely was returning to the vehicle, it began backing out and she began running after it, according to police. The 29-year-old mother was then struck by the SUV and thrown onto the pavement, police say.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Officer body-camera video shows the moment Columbus police found a boy who was inside his mother's SUV shortly after it was stolen.

WSYX obtained the video on Friday, a day after the incident that sent the boy's mom to a hospital, where she died later.

Alexa Stakely was picking up her 6-year-old son from a babysitter at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, police said. At one point, she placed the sleeping child in the Honda CR-V while it was running and went back inside the home to grab something she had forgotten from the babysitter.

"An amazing human being."

"She was my best friend."

"The most determined human I've ever met."

These statements and more like them were used to describe 29-year-old Alexa Stakely, who died one week ago, early July 11, while trying to stop thieves from stealing her vehicle with her 6-year-old son sleeping inside.

On Wednesday evening, more than 100 people gathered in the parking lot of Canal Winchester Local Schools' Winchester Trail Elementary School for a memorial vigil to pay homage to the young single mother who worked at the school as a speech-language pathologist but also had a part-time job as a waitress to support her son.

Senseless. Absolutely senseless. A woman is dead and a 6 year lost their mother.
All to steal a vehicle.

Sounds like her siblings were close to her as they had very kind things to say about her.

August 6, 2024 10 WBNS online article by 10TV Web Staff entitled ‘Coroner releases autopsy report for 29-year-old mother who died saving son from stolen vehicle’:

There is an excerpt form the article which appears to suggest that charges for the 19 old individual were downgraded? Am I reading that correctly? SMH. IIUC the teens (inferred to refer to the other two juveniles) are apparently still charged with murder. Why isn’t the eldest also charged with murder? Conspiracy relating to the theft? Sure hope that the investigators, prosecutors, and district attorney reexamine this matter. And upgrade as allowed for the planning, crime, and its resulting death. And seems the juveniles IMO should be tried as adults.

“Police said 19-year-old Gerald Dowling later admitted to his involvement in the incident as well. He was initially charged with murder but was later indicted on charges of manslaughter, grand theft of a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property.”

“The teens were charged with murder. A Franklin County juvenile court judge has requested that the teens be tried as adults.”
