Circumstances:
Irin Meyer was last seen during the day on 07/20/1979 either at her campsite in Harris Beach State Park or at McKay's Market in Brookings. Her tent containing belongings and her cat were located in the park by park staff when she failed to check out of the park. Her vehicle was found abandoned in the parking lot of Whaleshead Beach State Park about 5 miles north of Brookings on 07/29/2012. Investigation failed to produce any significant leads that would explain what happened to Irin.

There was fairly considerable news coverage in Oregon and St. Louis at the time of her disappearance--I'll summarize from articles available on Newspapers.com.

She was on an extended visit out west, ultimately planning to arrive in a San Francisco suburb to visit her sister, and had been gone about a month at the point where she went missing. Per Oregon newspapers, she was reported missing by a boyfriend in Deschutes County when she did not show up in Nevada on July 24 as planned, although a St. Louis paper says that she was reported missing by her family on July 23, after last hearing from her on July 14. Some articles refer to her as Irin Marie Meyer. There was some speculation at the time that she had fallen to her death from the cliffs near where her car was found and then drowned and/or been washed out to sea. If I'm understanding correctly, though, she had arrived at the campground on July 19 and paid for two nights, leaving her cat in the tent, while her car was parked 5-10 miles away by a beach on July 26 (article makes it sound like that's the day it occurred, but could be date it was found or first noted at that location). I can't imagine her planning on leaving her cat for such a length of time, so it seems likely that she disappeared sometime on July 20 (receipt for gas from that day) or early in the day of July 21.

Reading the Charley Project circumstances of her disappearance....it would seem she went in her car for groceries and cat food, and planned on returning immediately, hence cat zipped in sleeping bag/tent.....so most unlikely self harm.
I wonder if where her car was found, was on route back from where she purchased goods? If so, maybe she stopped for an innocent reason, and did fall as suggested, which would seem most likely scenario.
If her car was found 'outside' her grocery run route.....then a lot more questions arise.

Details of Disappearance

Meyer was last seen on July 20, 1979, either at McKay's Market in Brookings, Oregon or at her campsite at Harris Beach State Park in Gold Beach, Oregon. She had paid for two nights' camping on July 19. Meyer has never been heard from again. She was reported missing on July 23.

On July 29, her green AMC Gremlin hatchback with the Missouri license plate number BBR220 was found in the parking lot of Whaleshead Beach State Park, five miles from Brookings, with newly purchased groceries and cat food inside.

The cat was found zipped into Meyer's sleeping bag inside her tent at Harris Beach State Park, nearly starved to death. It would be uncharacteristic of Meyer to leave her cat without making arrangements for its care.

Meyer took only her purse with her when she disappeared. She is from St. Louis, Missouri, where she lived in the 5000 block of Waterman Boulevard and worked for several years at restaurants in the city. She quit her job a few months prior to her disappearance, gave up her apartment and went on and was on an extended visit with her sister and friends on the West Coast.

Police at the time she disappeared theorized she fell off a cliff, but this theory has not been proved. Her case is unsolved.
