TERREBONNE, Ore. (KTVZ) – Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies requested the public’s help Wednesday night in finding a missing Bend-area man last seen at midday Tuesday.
Jason R. Smith, 36, was reported missing Wednesday morning, Sgt. Nathan Garibay said. He was last believed to be at Peter Skene Ogden Wayside (the “High Bridge” over the Crooked River Gorge) on Highway 97 north of Terrebonne after being dropped off by a ride share around 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
Smith is described as a white male, 6-foot-2 and about 210 pounds, with medium-length brown hair. He was believed to be wearing a green Henley-style shirt, possibly a green and blue plaid jacket with white wool collar, black jeans and black shoes.
Anyone with information or who might have seen Smith was asked to call the non-emergency dispatch line at 541-693-6911.

Anyone feel free to edit, I don't usually post new cases. He was last known to be dropped off by rideshare on the High Bridge.

I almost think that there should be rules against rideshare services dropping people off on high bridges alone. I wonder if the driver asked about the destination. That would be an awkward and perhaps prying question, but it could save a life...

It's really in the middle of nowhere, generally speaking. It doesn't seem like he would have hopped out there just to walk to another location. Maybe that bridge has some kind of importance to him? Hopefully he just wanted to take a moment there, and he got another ride share somewhere else. According to Wikipedia, this bridge couldn't keep up with traffic through the area, so a new one was built a a little ways down. Meanwhile, this one is open to pedestrians. That makes me feel just slightly better somehow, and it may have been less suspicious to a rideshare driver because of that fact. I hope he just needed to clear his head and moved on safely...

Sad news from his sister:

Jason has been found. Thank you all for your support, concern, love, help, time and energy.

Next steps: grieve and heal as individuals and as a family.

Future work: get all bridges fenced and monitored, create a fund or NPO for mental health support, and many other tasks to help others find their way.

Please allow us space to do the many things unmentioned in the aftermath of losing a family member. I love the idea of celebrating J together with his many friends he had in the near future. Going forward, if you feel it, please share your Love of J with us all. ❤️
